The A's threw out Stewart and MOORE, not Welch.

This was, I think, the first year I TRULY knew that I liked the Giants more than the A's. But it wasn't until '90 that I officially became an A-hater. 3 years in a row with the World Series heartbreak, and their side-kick status was dead.

Welch must have been their #2 during one of their other WS years. I remember him getting 27 wins one time and thought wins were end all to evaluate pitchers.

Was Welch in the 89 rotation? Didn't they have a Scott Sanderson, too?

89' really reinforced what side of the Bay you stood on. Dual hats were just weak.

It was 1990 that he won 27 and took the AL CY.

Sure, wins are/were over-valued, but 27 is a freakish number. He still had a sub-3 ERA and his WHIP was 1.2, so he was still an absolute beast that year.

They had a few studly starters in that era. Dave Stewart, Bob Welch, Mike Moore and Storm Davis were the big four.

Guess I'll disagree there. He was very good that year, definite All-Star. But his 27 wins were largely a function of him pitching well and happening to be on the mound when the A'ss scored early (which they did a lot that year). A more revealing metric was his ERA+ which was a very nice 125. However, both Roger Clemens(211) and Chuck Finely(158) were FAR superior that year. In fact, Welch wasn't even the best SP on his team, compared to Dave Stewart (144). Welch had a very nice year, but the fact that the CY didn't go to Clemens that year is just a fucking travesty.

W/L; IP; SO; WHIP

Welch 27-6; 238; 2; 1.223
Clemens 21-6; 228; 4; 1.082

It's not even close really. Welch just happened to have much better run support.

Yeah that's it Storm Davis. Baseball cards were more important for me back then and a guy named Storm was cooler to me than what his K/BB per 9 ratio was.

It may carry a different meaning now but anyone else remember the poster of a seriously muscled out Giants player playing tug o war with the World Series banner with an equally buffed A's player?

A bit of balco foreshadowing perhaps?
