A few observations:
1) There is a run setting up for QBs in round 1
2) This will mean the Broncos have a very good chance of having a top non-QB name fall to them.
I think the 1st round 5 year contract is a factor in the QB run that is setting up. What Oswieler did to the Broncos after 4 years - did not escape attention around the league. By taking a developmental QB in round 1 you get 5 years of control on the salary and an extra year to develop. Also the front office can say these things take time and keep their jobs a little longer.
If there is a QB run in round 1 the Broncos will find better value at QB via trade. This makes a trade with the 9ers more likely - as they will be one of those clubs wanting to draft a top QB to get in front of everyone else - and another draft pick from the Broncos will help them get there. Kelly doesn't want to bet his 2nd chance in the NFL on Kaepernick getting well and leading the team - that bet is worth only one year to pay off. If Kaepernick is gone and a rookie QB is working his way into the starter role - Kelly will have a couple or three years to be a top contender. It appears to me it is worth for it for the 9ers to pay a chunk of Kaep's salary at least this season.
