I know a lot of people have been cringing at the thought, but as a guy who craves football and more importantly, plays fantasy football, I would LOVE a longer season.... LOL!!!

I would not want an 18 game season but if I had to pick the lesser of 2 evils I would prefer that over expanding the number of teams!

with a platform aiming to curb rookie contracts at three-years, make major changes to the franchise-tag designation, raise the minimum NFL salary to $1M and cut two weeks of preseason in exchange for an 18-game season.

They all seem pretty reasonable.

18 game season is a bad idea. They talk about the health of the players well this goes against that.

Typical NFL,. you have the best REgular season in sports because every game literally matters. So lets go and change it.

With the new IC, expanding of the playoffs and the inevitable 18 game schedule it really feels like the nfl is saying you know who we should model our league around? The NBA. And miraculously they think thats a good idea.

I am against the 18 game season as well.
Not only the grind on the players, but makes any NFL records obsolete.

If they were to have a 18 game season. they should expand the rosters, & make it mandatory that no one player could play more than 16 weeks. Meaning yes your back up QB would have to play atleast two games while your starter was on the inactive list.
This would give all players atleast 3 weeks off from the physical grind (including the bye week) through out the season.

If a player is dinged up he could take that time off, to heal up since they would have to take 2 weeks off somewhere anyways.

But I do not like the idea of having them play 18 games straight up.

(love the idea of shortening preseason though)

I agree with this. I'd actually be kind of okay with the "only play 16 of 18" rule not applying to QBs, Punters or Kickers, but ideally they should apply it to everyone.

actually I would okay with punters & kickers playing 18 weeks instead of carrying an extra punter & kicker on the roster. they dont take a pounding all year.

I think letting a lot of players play just 16 out of 18 would water down the regular season games - you want all of your best players(RB/WR/etc) playing every game

Well
A: sports that play more games play more players off the bench, why would it be unexpected to play bench players if they extend football season.

&

B: most starters willl miss some time except for a couple of the ironmen, so it really doesnt water anything down on the football field. Some extra strategy for when to sit a player (vs. whatever team & such) kinda like they do in baseball.

or
C: I would just say if this is unexceptable, scrap the whole idea of an 18 game season.

Another thing if Players have to play 18 games then agents want even more money for these players.

With all the safety & health of players the NFL says they are worried about. having them play an extra two weeks before playoff weeks, I figure it will get shot down anyways.

I think 16 is perfect...as it stands now players don't get game checks for preseason games so I can see why Gilbert might lobby for an 18 game season, but I'm not for it.

I heard Howie Long say that he's OK with the expansion to 18 games BUT you're going to have to expand the roster to about 60 players, and designate some of those guys just for special teams which is where some of your starters take a pounding.

I love the NFL too, but 16-gms. is enough,....6-7/months of grueling games, practices, injuries, concussions, rehabilitation, etc is more than enough for any human-being to endure,...btw = I luv your avatar [drummer/rush?],....we could add don Henley, bob Dylan to that non smilers club too.,...lol.

The NFL has said repeatedly that they do not want the season starting before Labor Day. So, that pushes the Superbowl out to mid February, and guarantees that all the playoff games will be in the dead of winter. If they are so concerned about playing the SB with snow on the ground, how are they going to deal with the AFC and NFC championship games in Foxboro or Green Bay?

No, the talent pool is thin enough already. More games = a bigger roster, and that just means more marginal players on a lot of teams. More games = more injuries, and that means more guys who don't belong there in the first place actually starting games. More games = a shitty NFL.

your last sentence sums it up well, but I think we are already getting to that point with the recent rule changes and "points of emphasis" nonsense.
