but Maclean seems to be blaming the calf cut on Karlsson by Cooke on the black netting...

he says if the refs saw that the puck went out when it did (and it did) then they would have called the play dead and the hit never would have happened.

by the way Cooke was shown in a replay early in this game with the exact same hit that cut Karlsson but didnt cut him this time. so cherry believes he did NOT do it on purpose on that alone.....

Not a bad first period for the Pens. Vokoun does need to control the rebounds better, though. It would be nice to get that puck frozen before the Sens can crash the net. They might have half their zone time from Vokoun not smothering the initial shot...

But it's good to take a lead into the break.

My first period impressions:

Pens don't look engaged yet
Sens do
Cowen knows what he did wrong
Kennedy has a temper, and Chris Neil knows it.
Vokoun is shaky
Cross checking is legal
Malkin can find the open space in a phone booth between two linebackers. Jesus.

I get the impression Grapes thinks it's okay because that's how he play's? Did I hear that right?

I dunno...both teams seem kinda disengaged. Not a ton of emotion yet. I'm alright with that. I know what this team does with emotion...but yeah, everything else you said, spot on.

Sens have had a handful of real close calls but can't seem to bury any.

Taking one guy out of a scrum is so bizarre to me. If you're gonna do that, you should probably take everyone in the scrum to the box.

I think it was the ten second face wash that did him in. The ref was right there talking to him probably telling him to cool it plus it was a much smaller player.

Pascal Dupuis smoked Karllsson (who was tired) there. Didn't score, but man he's a dangerous guy in the playoffs.

You're probably right about being told to stop...but every guy in a scrum is doing the exact same thing. There are times where someone does something excessive and it's obvious...that just wasn't one.

It makes perfect sense with the state of officiating today - you never know what is a penalty and what isn't. The refs can let everything go or call even the most phantom stuff - it's all about game and series management and I for one am glad OV called them out on it.

That combined with the ample cross checks in this game...they're good. BUT NO FASHWASHES IN SCRUMS.
