This is the big reason Markeese Stepp is at USC instead of ND. He wanted to go to ND and ND wanted him, but he had academic issues that soured the recruitment of him.
The other thing that’s interesting is that they’re losing OL and DL. Six of the 11 are along those lines and Stanford’s strength has been its OL and DL over the years. They’re built for that and I’d they can’t recruit and sustain depth there it’s going to continue to be ugly for them.
They are still among the toughest in the NCAA. As an ND fan I readily acknowledge they are tougher than ours.
What I have heard is though that once you’re in they have “Athlete friendly” courses to keep people eligible whereas ND makes you take real classes.
Disagree. Their academic restrictions are even more stringent than ND’s. I have to check but I’m not sure they even allow early enrollees.
True they’ve had some decent classes but that’s the ceiling for them.
And Shaw’s been a steady, if not great coach for them. I think losing their S&C...
What are you basing this on? If they had checked out, it would have been after the Michigan game. They likely would have dropped at least one more game.
They had 11 players enter the transfer portal this month. That seems abnormally high, especially for a program that struggles to get to 85 scholarships due to their recruiting limitations.
I would agree with that if there was a lot of time left in his contract. And it’s also the reason why he was given passes for many 8-5 seasons, Declan Sullivan several academic scandals, and the routine embarrassing performances on the national stage.
At some point you need some consistency to...
I think it’s a big leap to go from position coach to OC and be able to adjust on the fly in games. Also he doesn’t strike me as someone who can push back on any of Kelly’s worst instincts.
I think he’ll get the extension, but he’ll go out on his own terms within the next 5 years. He’ll continue to do just good enough to not get fired because winning NC’s is no longer the mandate. It’s enough to be in the conversation.
Who’s “we”? I know the conferences want to rule CFB but that’s not how it works.
And it was harder, not easier for ND to get a bowl bid under the BCS system. And they basically have to go undefeated to even be considered for the playoffs. Most teams can afford at least one loss.
Historically they’ve turned down bowl games in the past (if they weren’t big enough). Yes they lose out on the prescribe time but it’s not unprecedented at ND. Of course that was under the old bowl structure (even before the BCS era).
Of course for decades the university didn’t even allow them...
