May not be Hitner anymore, but you have to think he still knows how to wrap up. Watching that guy in the flat last week walk through three of our defenders was mind numbing.

Mike Jones...

Coach Jay Gruden had said on Monday that Bruton remained in the concussion protocol and that the team wouldn’t know until late in the week whether he could play this week. However, things obviously have changed. Bruton is the second safety that Washington has lost in the past two weeks. DeAngelo Hall tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Week 3 and had surgery this week and will not return this season.

Whitner was at Redskins Park Wednesday morning, signed his contract and then joined his new teammates on the practice field a few minutes after the stretching portion of the session had concluded.

Whitner, 31, is a three-time Pro Bowl safety (2010-14). The eighth overall pick of the 2006 draft, Whitner began his career with the Buffalo Bills. He last played in 2015 after spending that season and 2014 with the Browns.

However, the 5-foot-10, 208-pound Whitner remained unsigned and didn’t spend training camp or the preseason with any team. For his career, the Ohio State product has 856 tackles, 11 interceptions and 11 forced fumbles.

He's 31, not 35 like Clark was. Let's hope this works. Boy I am getting tired of all these Band Aid fixes at safety. I really wanted the guy from West Virginia the Raiders got once Kelly was taken.

Just speculation on my part but after Kelly was gone, think Scot wasn't able to trade back far enough to go for a player he thought worth that value like a Chris Jones or Butler.

Same thing Scot did last year, he will go through players until he gets something he likes. I appreciate that in him.

A couple viewpoints on Whitner. One from a Cleveland kid who seems pretty reasonable. Another from a cat in Tampa Bay who asked if the Bucs should seek after him and also answered in the negative to said question. If both are accurate accounts. The Skins are getting a player on the downside of his career that has lost both a step and some of his intimidation factor. The potential bonuses could be his experience and leadership. All that said.

Cleveland Browns 2015 Roster Analysis: Defensive backs

Donte Whitner

Age: 30
Experience: 10 years
Contract status: Free agent 2018

Veteran safety Donte Whitner saw a decline in production this season as age may have started to creep up on him.

Whitner, who is known for his ability to play up in the box and be a run-stopping safety, struggled in the run game, missing a fair amount of tackles and not appearing as fast or as explosive as his 2014 Pro Bowl season with the Browns. In coverage, Whitner is above average but has never been known as a ball hawking safety.

Whitner’s struggles were due in part to a poorly run defensive scheme and injuries to other key defenders, such as Joe Haden. Whitner is a leader in the secondary and has played his heart out for his hometown team. Whitner is the unquestioned starting strong safety for the Browns, but as he ages he will need to wrap up on tackles instead of just trying to deliver the big hit.

2016 Outlook:

Whitner is determined to help be a part of the turnaround in Cleveland, and his veteran leadership is so valuable to the unstable culture inside the Browns front office and locker room. Although Whitner had a down season, he is extremely valuable to the team’s run defense and is a solid starting safety even though he is now on the wrong side of 30.

Should The Buccaneers Pursue Donte Whitner?

The Cleveland Browns released safety Donte Whitner Saturday as they continue their rebuilding process. Would Whitner and the Buccaneers be a good match?

The Buccaneers still face a need at the safety positions, despite the returns of Keith Tandy and Chris Conte. Despite their lack of interest in free agent Reggie Nelson, should the Bucs pursue the 30-year old former Brown, 49er, and Bill?

Quite simply, no.

Whitner has been drastically underwhelming. In San Francisco, Whitner had 27 passes defensed, twice posting double digits. The most he’s had in any other season is seven, in his final year with Buffalo. He also had five interceptions as a 49er, the same amount as his five years combined in Buffalo. Simply put, Whitner cashed in his high value as a free agent and wasn’t ever good enough to live up to it.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Pro Bowl safety leave San Francisco and not produce the same. In fact, Bucs fans know it first hand withDashon Goldson. At this point, you wonder if it’s the players not being able to live up to their contracts or if they were set up for success under Harbaugh & Co., successes that couldn’t be duplicated elsewhere. Whitner is a prime example of that. He was average, at best, in Buffalo, then a Pro Bowler in San Fran, cashed in his value for big money in Cleveland, and was back to being average.

The Bucs need to steer clear of this one. If they decide they need to bring in another safety via free agency rather than the draft, I’ll argue all day they need to bring in Nelson. Whitner will sign elsewhere for minimal money and whatever team takes the risk will get minimal return. That’s just the kind of player Whitner is. Big name, weak game.

Considering what we have now it doesn't hurt to kick the tires. More than likely he is a 12 game player at most.
