I don't think too many of us were expecting more than 8-8. But this is the year we find out about our QB, and our coach, and what we saw was an overmatched QB and an undisciplined team who appears to be poorly coached.

Well then - in spite of the protests of several folks here - that probably makes the decision to only sign Cousins for one year a wise one. He is again auditioning for the long term role. More performances like last nt (not horrible but not good) will quite possibly ensure that Cousins will not get the big contract in DC or perhaps anywhere.

Time for certain folks to step up regardless of how the team fares this season. Cousins has too many weapons to not have multiple good performances. I also will be very curious to see how Breeland fares against Dallas since he had a horrible game last nt (understandable against the best in the game). The defensive coaching staff also needs to prove that they are not among some of the worst in the NFL.

Forget about this years record. This team needs to step up on Sunday to at least show that they have promise for the future.

Still digesting things, but I did find myself wondering during the game why KC didn't take off running at several points earlier in the game (before that awful 2nd quarter took the wind out of their sails). When he finally decided to, it was on a 4th and 10, although he did manage 8 yards before allegedly being hit out of bounds. I saw minimal use of Garcon and DJax (other than a series where he caught a few and ran down the sideline for decent yardage). I guess I'm scratching my head at the fact that he couldn't find any soft spots in that zone coverage, or use his legs as he did to make at least one TD last season. And I am saying all this as a Kirk fan, btw

On a sidenote, the ref's didn't exactly swallow their whistles but they were definitely letting 'em play which I liked. Penalties were a debacle, especially that sea of false starts. At least there weren't many (any?) holding calls.

Perhaps not many holding calls but one critical one. Jones had just rushed for 9-10 yds & into Steelers territory. However - Davis was called for holding. Williams was called for a false start on the next play & all of sudden it is 1st & 25 on the Redskins side of the field. They subsequently turn the ball over on downs. You are not going to win many playing like that - just one of several mistakes made last nt - time to turn it around.

Cousins was off target all night long. Despite the numbers he puts up he has below average accuracy and yesterday was clearly a bad day. But I'm sure he can look better throwing the football.

But yesterday's game, shows you why he will never be elite : lack of pocket awareness. Jon Gruden pointed it several times and that's what make the difference between good and great QBs. See Big Ben yesterday buying time to make things happen or the TD pass from Rodgers to Davante Adams.
Well yes, he'll definitely come up short when compared to 1st ballot future HOFers like Ben and Rodgers, but I think overall Cousins does have pretty good pocket awareness and does a nice job avoiding the rush - though certainly Ben and Rodgers are much better at buying time - they're amazing at it. I guess I got so used to seeing RG3 show zero pocket awareness that Cousins looks so much better in comparison.

True but last nt also probably bought back fears by many of his tendency to make mistakes (he was lucky that the Steelers dropped one gift). Hopefully it was just a hiccup and he once again cuts down on the INTs moving forward.

False starts while not as costly as holding, 5 yards vs 10 yards, can still be drive killers. After BB's INT and nice ret to Pitt's 37 yd line. Two Cousins passes had the Skins sitting nicely with a 2nd 4 from the Pitt 20 yard line. The Skins 1st penalty of the game, a false start by Lich than made it 2nd 9 from the Pitt 25 yd line and seemed to kill whatever mo the Skins had at the time. One imc pass and another pass for a crappy 2 yd gain later Hopkins, our best offensive weapon Monday, is kicking his 2nd FG. Still, a good offense, Pitt's for example. Can overcame a 2nd n 22 from their own 13 yd line (after the Kerrigan strip/sack) w/o any problem and march smartly downfield for a score and a lead in the game they put a fuckin chokehold on and never let go of.

And instead of taking advantage of their good fortune (Garcon gaining an additional 7 yards on JC's fumble which was the Skins first 1st down since DJax's 33 yd catch and run reception) On the very next play Cousins throws an ill advised, bonehead pass while under no pressure to Reed who's pretty much triple coveraged and Shazier INTs.

The penalties you're talking about came immediately after Djax's 33 yd catch n run. Which gave the Skins a 1st down at Pitt's 42 yd line. Jones' run would've given them a 1st n 10 at the Pitt 32 yd ln. Instead 2 penalties in a row made it 1st n 25 from the Skins 43 yd ln. Cousins did complete 4 passes in a row on the next 4 plays. Unfortunately all 4 passes only netted 24 yards. Pitt took over at their own 33 yd ln and marched downfield taking up almost the rest of the 1st half on their way to their 2 TD and a 14-6 fuckin chokehold.

Sigh......and so it went.

I hear you Breed. This team does not have the talent to survive costly mistakes. Heck - even w/o mistakes it will be tough to win most games. Time for the Redskins to put this one beyond them & at a minimum avoid the offensive penalties and turnovers (and for God's sake Kerrigan just fall on the damn ball).

Accurate and shows a team wide breakdown on offense. Defense was just putrid.

So the Skins did not handle the Steelers zone well. Expect to see more zone, a lot until the Skins beat it.

I had the natives in my weekly pool and lost by one game. I expect Gruden to send me the $90 in the mail now.

While there's no way of telling right now and maybe they did fuck up. I don't think Skins pass catchers had a breakdown. JC's fumble and Davis' critical holding penalty aside, I thought they played decently enough. There were a lotta passes that were low or behind open pass catchers all night. There was hardly any Pitt rush to speak of and while there were bad decisions on KC's part. The biggest one might've been not seeing Thompson when he lined up wide left as a WR. Cuz instead went to Reed in the end zone which Shazier broke up. I don't know what option CT is on that play, but when Timmons was the defender that went out there to cover him. I gotta believe in all that space Skins coaches were confident CT could beat him and somebody had to at least mention that to KC. If anyone recorded the game look at the replays and towards the end of the play. You'll see Thompson with what looked to be 3 yards or so in front of Timmons who's trailing him. I don't think Cuz ever thought about Thompson on the play and to me that was a very favorable match up for the Skins.

Crowder did fuck up badly on that first Pitt punt. Fair catching it and he had open space to run for days.

And while the running game was nothing to write home about. I think the Skins ran the ball 5 times in the first half. That's not conducive to as Jay said, wanting to establish a running game.

The defense after those first 2 series and the strip/sack they were pitifully putrid. Barry and Gruden may be the only people in the football world that don't realize we're simply not cut out to play as passively as we do.

So the Skins did not handle the Steelers zone well. Expect to see more zone, a lot until the Skins beat it.

Again, you may be right, but I agree with Dave. One QB was sharp and making plays. The other was not so sharp and not making plays. Despite all the breakdowns with the defense and OL. I think that was the biggest difference in the game. And those early misfires on Cuz's part served to create a snowball effect and we got rolled.

Had a 2nd TV on watching my other team play and for most of the night the Red Sox were outscoring the Redskins. Also couldn't help but notice what a difference maker Leanard Williams was on Sunday, 7 QB hits, 2.5 sacks and wrecking havoc all game.

OK. First off, fuck the Sox....in their left ear-hole and coming out their right nostril.

And wait! What? Are you saying Williams had 7 QB hits and 2.5 sacks all by his damn self? Are you including the 2.5 sacks in with the 7 total QB hits? Cuz if so, I found a site that seems to back up what you say if that's the case.

Yes those were the numbers I heard, also 6 total tackles. Now he is helped by playing with other good players but a dominating performance by a guy who was projected to be a dominant player. And we passed.
