Woody Paige Retiring

Whether you love or hate him, or simply don't care, Paige retiring is an end of a historic era in Denver.

Paige was one of those guys most of us just loved to hate on but deep down inside enjoyed, even if we usually disagreed with him. He will be missed. He's gotta be pushing 70 by now, though, so I guess it's time.

I personally have always like him because he wasn't afraid to be a Denver homer in front of national audiences, and never really cared what people thought. Always thought his analysis was pretty good too, more specifically on football, but the guys is very knowledgeable about most sports. He's was little over the top sometimes on PTI or whatever, but most of his articles I thought were very well written and good reads. I remember when he broke into Denver sports........makes me feel old

He turned 70 last month. I always thought he was a LOT older than me.

What I like about Woody - is he tells sports through the narrative of a story line - that's old school. I did retire from him a few years ago - though. Good luck to Woody.

However, Paige is reportedly not “retiring” from sportswriting. Westword.com reports that Paige is leaving the paper and moving to the Colorado Springs Gazette after a pay dispute. Paige had been writing a weekly column at the Post. The report seems to be backed up by former Post colleague Adrian Dater, who wished Paige well at the Gazette.

Unfortunately the Gazette is not web friendly - blocking columns unless you pay for a subscription. Which I won't do even if I live in the area.

Sad to hear this. While I never quite agreed with Paige on everything he still was fun to read and I loved his column where he answered questions from fans every week. He didn't shy away from some of the tougher questions and he wasn't afraid to give his honest answer.

Also seems to be a trend these days that major news outlets are letting go of those or working hard to push them out that have been there a long time. We have seen this with ESPN and them just letting Tom Jackson go and many others. I'm guessing this is a way to get cheaper as obviously somebody who has been at a paper for say 40 years is going to make more than some kid coming out of college with this being his first serious job. Sad to see.

I found interesting among his list of "favorite players to watch and talk to", the Brincos included Tom Jackson, Chris Harris, and Peyton Manning. Just a guess, but I think #7 would have certainly been among his favorites to watch. Probably not to talk to.
