Always on top of things, Cali! Is he an ILB or safety?
Special Teams ace at this point but ILB.

Young guy, 25, possibly the end of Adam Heyward and a good boost with Bruton since we let go Jeron Johnson and DY

Finally, there is the guy they're calling "big safety", second year linebacker Terence Garvin. Perhaps most famous for his jaw breaking block on Bengals punter Kevin Huber, Garvin actually went undrafted in 2013, but impressed as a tryout player in the Steelers rookie camp. He continued to impress in training camp, showed an aptitude for special teams and made the 53-man roster.

As well as contributing on special teams, Garvin replaced Williams at starting ILB last season against the Green Bay Packers.

At 6-3, 221-pounds Garvin is an impressive athlete who, according to Coach Butler, has a bright future ahead of him.

"I think you've got to watch the guy we call 'Big Safety,' Terence Garvin," Butler said. "Terence Garvin one day will be a starter in this league. That's my opinion."

"We're so loaded inside we've got to find a place for him, so we're playing him outside and inside, playing him both sides to see if he can learn both. You always have to have a swing guy. Stevenson Sylvester was always the swing guy. Now it's 'Big Safety,' or maybe Zumwalt. We'll see."

Garvin has been working hard to learn both outside and inside linebacker in an attempt boost his chances of both making the team and having a significant contribution, and admits it's nice to get a compliment for his efforts.

Some people call guys like this "just" a ST player. Scot uses a different word for guys like Garvin. He is a football player. What that means in the long run is anybody's guess and maybe his entire career is on STs but maybe like Monte Coleman he develops into a rotational player or even eventually a starter.

I hate the term he "just" a ST player. That shows such a lack of knowledge of what a football team is. Everyone can't be a star. :2cents:

it is a good signing and he might be more then "just a special teams guy " i think he could help in pass coverage at the ilb position and he tackles well

Don't sleep on Garvin. He had the unfortunate disposition of being thrown into a depth chart that had 4-5 starting caliber ILB's. Not planned, but they had 1 guy come back from injury that wasn't exactly expected to recover (Spence), and BPA threw another guy into the mix (Shazier). He wasn't buried on the depth chart because of poor play, it was just how things played out. It was a great problem to have lol.

Garvin is a beast. He is excellent in pass coverage, and decent in run coverage. He's better in the open field than in between the trenches. Our LB coach, now DC, has openly stated numerous times that Garvin could start on any team in the NFL. He made his impact on ST in PIT, while making appearances on defense maybe a handful of snaps per game. I wanted PIT to keep him, but the position was crowded & the budget is too tight.

Sounds good, but damn 221 pounds at ILB could work if he was 5'9" or so, but at 6'3". He sounds like a tall and really light in the ass target. How'd he do when y'all played him at OLB?

I know 221 is light for a linebacker in today's game and maybe Face could tell whether I am right or not but I thought Jack Lambert played MLB at about 220 and he was tall. Yeah according to Pro Football Reference 6-4 and 220 aka bean pole but man could he play.

Yeah but the center blocking him was 250.

I love this signing. We have been weak covering backs and tight ends for a while. We've also had horrible special teams forever. Even if he is "just" a special teams player that is a huge need. I'm sick of just hoping we break even on teams every week, how about we actually win some games because of our special teams for a change?

Not very good in run support. Most situations they threw him into at OLB was 3rd & long, passing situations. Like I said, he's good in space & pass coverage. It was sort of PIT's "big-nickel" package that the DC Butler played with. I don't think that I recall him ever blitzing off the edge.
