This is NOT official from the team as of now.

Tho Grant Paulson did tweet a 'source' saying this would be the result.

Redskins assigned the non-exclusive franchise tag to QB Kirk Cousins.

According to the Washington Post's Mike Jones, it's "what Cousins' camp wanted." The one-year tender locks Cousins into $19.953 million for 2016, and gives the sides over four months to hammer out a long-term deal. The "non-exclusive" nature of the tag means Cousins can negotiate with other teams, but the Redskins have the right to match any offer. Were Cousins to sign elsewhere and the Redskins decided not to match, they would receive two first-round picks as compensation. Even in a quarterback-starved league, it's not going to happen.

Well that's is done. Hopefully a long term deal is reached so we will have money for FA and to extend Reed.

Cuz has said he wanted the opportunity to see what other teams would offer. This allows him to see those offers while also protecting the skins. I see it as a win/win.

Unfortunately it probably doesn't really give KC a chance to see what other teams might offer as no teams are willing to give up 2 first round picks for KC. Thus, its highly unlikely any offers will be forthcoming.

Exactly. We still get to match any offers he gets with the security of two first rounders if we (somehow theoretically) can't or won't. And the difference between the franchise and transition tags is a paltry $2M. This is like those paid TV ads that offer one copper pot for $100 but then offer a second one for $10 more. Why not just get the second, right? Unbelievable how some were pushing just for the transition tag.

Which is exactly the point of the franchise tag. But I wouldn't rule out teams like the Browns or Rams trying to make a little bit of a push for him.

one thing I'm curious about...doesn't this allow his agent to look at what offers would be from other teams and at minimum get an understanding of how other teams value Cuz' talent?

It will be real interesting if someone does make an offer. As much as I am a fan of KC, 2 first round picks gives you pause.

Yes it does. But the question is whether other teams will even consider negotiating given the two first rounders they'd have to give up.

It does, but you got to figure that other teams will take into account the total cost of making him an offer. Its one thing to offer a guy $22 million a year and still have the #2 pick in the draft.

But if you are going to pay a premium AND lose the two first rounders... thats harsh. Reality is, a team could make him an offer and negotiate with the Skins on the compensation. We got a second rounder and Clinton Portis for Champ Bailey after all. So while two first rounders is the sticker price, if some one really wants him, they wil lcall us first and try to gauge how receptive we might be to taking less than the two 1st rounders.

I guess he can engage in conversations with any team at this point. But the skins will probably discount any informal offers or values on KC. I know I wouldn't accept them if I were in the FO.

So, his agent can't view all offers? Only those offers that would allow skins to match or get the 2 first rounders? That was what I was wanted to know.

Not sure what offers you are referring to. Ones just relating to KC or all offers for any QB?

HE can view all offers. But an offer isnt considered legit unless its on paper. Kirks agent could come back and say the Canadian juggernauts offered $40 million a year, if it aint in writing it dont exist. The only way they can use other teams to judge his value is if the other team gives a formal offer sheet.

And risks losing 2 first round picks.
