We have to understand that Kirk is going to get overpaid. Why? He (somewhat like Joe Flacco) blew up in a contract year. Kirk also knows we've got no backup plan. Outside of winning all the marbles like Flacco did, he's got all the leverage in the world. If we balk, we've got to either float the franchise tag this year or pay him something approaching what Wilson got. Is that more than he's worth? Sure. But we've got nearly zero choice here.

Sure we have a choice... let him hit FA, keep Griffin and watch Gruden get fired in approximately 9 months.

Count me in.

For those screaming transition tag because no one will outbid us... Are you really willing to risk it over $2.5 million in cap space?? Mind you we pissed away 5 times that last year in Griffin and Roberts alone. Figure in the 5-7 seven other guys we paid who did diddly fucksquat for us, and we shit more than that $2.5 million on guys who did nothing for us. But some would have us quibble over a few million and possibly face going into the season with NO Cousins, No realistic QB plan, and in no position to draft a day one starter at the position.

Fucking brilliant!!!!!

I know the franchise tag is probable. ITs all about money in the end that is why I thought the transition tag would have been an option for KC. Just b/c we put the trans tag on KC doesnt mean we are going to lose him. We can match any offer that is made so that is why I thought it was safe.

But if KC is thinking like Shark why would he sign a long term deal with us? He could get 20 mil on the franchise tag or hit FA with the transition tag and still get 20 mil from someone else or with us. So in this case KC has all the leverage.

if you think 20 mil a year for 5 years and 55 mil guaranteed warrants a "come on dad " that tells me you wouldnt match it which means he goes without compensation and we have an over payed colt mccoy under center next year

and if you believe the browns or texans or chimp kelley wouldnt offer that then you need to brush up on those teams

the skins will franchise him , they will continue to negotiate with him and an extension will be reached much like williams got done last season

Then why the rumor of the transition tag from Ian Rapport? If KC gave SM a fair offer right now I think SM would of signed him by now. I agree he would be franchised and try to work out a long term deal in the offseason but if SM really wanted to test the waters he would put the transition tag on him.

If he gets that deal in FA then yes we would be forced to match it. I think Brock's contract should give a clue on how to handle this situation. I know we are not going to lose him. You guys think just b/c the transition tag is applied that we are going to lose him.

Good article. He admits KC might not get what he is asking for if we put the transition tag on him, This is Kiem

INDIANAPOLIS -- The topic of the week is an easy one: quarterbacks. Yes, there are other Washington Redskins stories to discuss, but the pressing one right now involves both Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III. So here we go. @Cwatt80, @dchomer4life, @jflora615.

If trade and tag Cousins where do they go: First of all, they're not going to trade him (that's based on talking to people with the Redskins). Consider this: If the Redskins, who absolutely like him, don't believe in him enough at this point to pay him, say, $20 million a year then could you see another team doing so -- and I'm not positive that's the asking price; just throwing that number out there. Regardless the deal Cousins wants is more than Washington is willing to pay and he'd want something similar from another team. They'd also not only pay a high amount, but then trade multiple draft picks? It doesn't make sense. If the Redskins tag him, I do think they'll draft a quarterback if they like one -- whether in the later rounds or even in rounds 2 or 3. Connor Cook
, Christian Hackenberg and Cardale Jones are quarterbacks they've interviewed -- I don't know how much they like any of these players so don't read too much into it. But the bottom line is, they must have a Plan B. If, in your scenario, they traded him you could not draft someone in the later rounds. You would have to pick someone high in the draft. Again, though, I was told flatly there'd be no trade.

Make him prove it: The Redskins absolutely want a long-term deal, but they want it at a good price. So it's not as if they want to make Cousins prove anything. But to get the kind of money the market might dictate now? Yes, they would want to see another year of comparable production. I'm not a fan of the franchise tag in this situation because it could end up costing Washington a lot of money in the long run -- and it adds several million to their cap this season. But if they're not comfortable with the amount being discussed now -- and they're not -- then it's a necessary gamble.

Is the transition tag better?: I don't think so and nobody I've talked to outside the organization does either. But it is a possibility. Off the top of my head, I don't remember any team ever using the transition tag on a quarterback. The cost is lower, of course. But the Redskins then let another team do their bidding and structure it in a way that, if they do match, it could leave them in a bad spot for a couple seasons. Of course, if the market does not unfold the way Cousins hopes, then it could work. I will say again, the Redskins like him and know him better than anyone. There are desperate teams for quarterbacks, but I wonder how high someone would be willing to go for Cousins -- did he impress other teams enough in the last 10 games to warrant that sort of deal? That's not to say someone wouldn't give him that money, but if the Redskins have a wait-and-see approach, then if I'm another team I'd have a little pause, too.

seriously? Reporters today care less about accuracy and more about hits. Hits to their blog, that is. The drive to be first with a story is more important than accuracy. Most times, they throw shit on the wall and see what has legs. You know this, Dean.

I'll trust Scot to get this done right for us. He's well aware of the ramifications of getting it right.

“It’s not about the individual, it’s the sum of the parts,” Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan said. “There are 52 other guys. I have to make sure the organization is taken care of, but I want Kirk here and Kirk wants to be here. There’s a way to get to that point.”
