AS he plays more he is being a good player. This is the beginning of the end for Murphy. Murphy is going to be a backup special teams player. Our former 2nd round pick.

You do realize most second rounders aren't even backups? Again, why isn't Smith starting now?

Maybe the coaches don't feel he's ready to start just yet as his run defense isn't quite ready.

From a stats only perspective Smith looks ready though as Smith had 33 total tackles 23 solo/10 asst and 7 sacks. Compared to Murphy's 32 total tackles 10 solo/22 asst and 3.5 sacks.

A 2nd round pick should be a starter in year 2 or 3. Worst case is a backup on a team with good depth at the position.

Exactly...the coaches feel that Murphy is a better football player right now. That is why he is starting.

Stats don't account for situation.

Pretty sure Trent Murphy is a starter but let us examine your statement and look at 2013...based on week 1

Starters- John Cyprien, Zack Ertz, Darius Slay, Mati Teo, Menalik Watson, Kawann Short, Kevin Minter, Kiki Alonso, Leveon Bell, Jonathan Hankins, Jamie Collins, Robert Alford, Eddie Lacey

Back ups- Justin Hunter, Giovanni Bernard, Geno Smith, Tank Carradine, Robert Woods, Jonathan Banks, Gavin Escobar, Margus Hunt, Jamar Taylor, Vance McDonald, Arthur Brown, Aaron Dobson

New team or out of league- Jon Bostic, David Amerson, DJ Swearinger, Montee Ball, Christine Michael

Fewer than half of the second rounders from three years ago met your threshold of being a starter in year three. Trent Murphy has been the starter most of his career. He may not be next season...time will tell but for now, he was a successful pick. He isn't as flashy as many of you would like but he is a solid football player just like Rob Ninkovich.

How is Murphy a successful pick? We drafted Smith b/c the organization had doubts about him with a high 2nd round pick. IF Murphy was successful why burn a high 2nd rounder? The word was that Murphy was a reach in the draft and its coming true. The guy doesn't have the pass rush moves to be a 3-4 olb. Im not saying he is a bust but everyone expected a lot more from especially playing with Kerrigan. There is no way he is the player Ninkovich is. Niko is a ten times better pass rusher. Murphy strong suit in the pros is his run defense. He sets the edge well.

I wanted Moses in that draft and we got damn lucky he was there in the 3rd round. Damn lucky.

Why would you draft Smith? Do you only see them as 2 OLBs in a base defense? It is the only reason I can see for you statement dean. Isn't there packages where you can use all three at one time? I thought the idea was to have the most good football players you could possibly have without destroying your cap.

Teams don't draft for need. They typically draft BPA.

Look at this last draft...the Broncos took Shane Rey in the first when they had Miller and Ware. Colts took Phillip Dorsett in the first when they had TY Hilton, Donte Moncrief, and Andre Johnson.

Hell, look at the Matt Millen drafts of WR. He kept taking them because they were best on their board...even if they all did suck until Megatron.

To answer the other part of your question, Murphy is a successful pick by your own standards. He is starting in his second season. Even when I showed you a majority of second rounders are not starting in their third season.

Onto the Ninkovich comparison. It is spot on. You do realize Ninkovich only has 6.5 sacks and he is playing the side Murphy is better suited play? You may want to see where Ninkovich was in year three as well...1 sack...even though Murphy is only in year 2.

From there you need to understand situational football. On obvious passing downs, Smith is out there for one purpose....get to the QB. He is a better pass rusher than Murphy and nobody is arguing that. What we are saying is Murphy is a better football player on this date according o the coaches. How do we know this? He is the starter.

You wanted Moses in the second. I am happy we didn't listen to you. Apparently your draft grade for Moses was a full round higher than every football team. He was there in the third because that is where he belonged.

They want him to be a flashy pro bowler.

he has a lot of pressures team leading i believe

also either he or smith could bulk up and play DE
