I heard this on the telecast either yesterday or Sunday. Of all MLB players with 100 plate appearances or more, Gutierrez is at the very top in slugging percentage. Ahead of Cruz. Ahead of Harper. Ahead of Davis. Ahead of all the roided up Blue Jay sluggers. He's at the very top.
If a fulltime player who puts up a 1.000 OPS is worth $25 million a year, then what is a player worth who puts up a 1.000 OPS in, say, 65 games (2/5ths of a season)? Is he therefore worth 2/5ths of $25 million? That would be $10 million.
Some desperate team is going to offer Frankie an eye-popping amount of money next year. How much would you be willing to have the Mariners pay him, assumming our payroll will be around $115-120 million. $2 million? $4 million? More?
