BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots did not add a cornerback until the final round of last week’s NFL Draft, and this week they’re cutting one from the roster.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Patriots will release cornerback Alfonzo Dennard.
Dennard, 25, was drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2012 draft, after charges for assaulting a police officer caused him to slide down from his expected second-round draft slot. He ended up playing in 10 games for the Patriots as a rookie, making three interceptions, one forced fumble and 35 tackles. The following summer, however, Dennard was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Lincoln, Neb.
Dennard would play 10 games in the 2013 season before serving his jail sentence in the offseason that followed.
Last year, Dennard played in six games for New England, intercepting one pass and making 15 tackles.
The move, combined with the offseason departures of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browners, leaves the Patriots with a number of question marks at the cornerback position.
