Given what happened with Willis last week I thought this was a prank when I first read it but wow!

Pretty amazing. Have to think that some other players are likely to take note of Borland's decision to quit due to his concerns about potential brain damage. Won't be too surprised if a few others at least consider doing likewise.

Troy Aikman retired at a young age because of numerous concussions.

man this kid was fun to watch...this off season is just gut punch after gut punch, hope the best for Borland he could have been a special player I think.
Borland was the best rookie ILB in the league last season.

I wonder if the Niners will go after 3/4 of his 600k signing bonus? They could if they wanted to.

Troy Aikman retired at a young age because of numerous concussions.

This is quite a bit different, though, since Borland has only played one year and there is now much more evidence about the chronic effects of head trauma than there was when Aikman retired.

I doubt that a lot of guys will follow Borland's lead, but I bet a few at least consider doing so.

The guy probably has his head on right & graduated with a degree. That along with the money from his rookie season, likely around 500k after taxes/fees, is more than enough to give a smart college grad a head start with his next venture in life.

I don't think a ton will retire like this, but I bet we see more and more in the future retiring at a young enough age that they can live without a lot of medical concerns. Most probably after that 2nd contract where they can make some bucks.
