Could it be as simple as this....

Chip wants what he had on the college level. Young hungry players that feel beholden to the coach for giving them a shot. The one thing a college coach coming to the NFL really doesnt want is alot of established stars who might challenge his method. So that appears to be what Chip is going for, guys who either

1. Already played under him
2. Guys who have not been in the NFL long enough to realize its a business and might have ideas contrary to what Chip wants.
i get that point, wanting his own culture, hard working dudes, whatever else. but ill say this, the non chip guys are awfully productive. djax, mccoy, maclin.

having all that cap space is great but you would think they would use that to resign their best players who are only 26. they're not gonna find younger or better guys in the free agency than them too. if they sign some top free agents they will over spend. their best route would be to sign a bunch of young B level guys

I might agree with you on Jackson & Macklin (although you always have to hold your breath in regards to Jackson due to his size).

However - don't necessarily agree in regards to McCoy. 26 (& 27 when the season starts) is not that young for most RBs. You have to look at them in terms of carries and not necessarily years. Big name backs like Portis & Sean Alexander fell apart right around this time. Most backs start to go downhill after 1500/1600 carries and McCoy is just a tad under 1500 right now.

There are always exceptions like AP and Lynch, but that is not the norm. That is why I stated that Kelly is gambling in this case. Also - Gore is not simply the replacement for McCoy. He is significantly cheaper & there will be enough leftover money to perhaps sign a rookie RB and then some. Gore will very likely be a role player.

I can think of many high profile RBs who were cut or traded to the outrage of many fans who were a distant memory in a year or two. We shall see in this case. Again -would love to be wrong in terms of the Eagles struggling on offense (don't really care if McCoy & Macklin do well elsewhere).

What the hell is Kelly doing? Bradford doesn't fit his offensive scheme.

Maybe Chip plans to trade Bradford to another team to move up to get Mariotta.

Nothing would surprise me with the Eagles at this point.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Maybe he thinks Jay would love to have a pocket passer like Bradford.

Let it be a team like the Titans then. We already have a QB with 2 ACL repairs. Yikes.

That would definitely be close. They still might lose Aldon Smith too. That restructuring of his contract to non-guaranteed money give the Niners a lot of flexibility. Of course, if they do decide to cut him, what do they have left on defense? Eric Reid, Ahmad Brooks, and a broken down Navarro Bowman?

He had a damn good rookie year, but we'll see how he'll do without Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, Ray McDonald and a healthy Navarro Bowman. That defense and the 49ers in general will look completely different.

Apparently the trade includes a swap of picks this year although the picks to be swapped has not been announced yet. If the Eagles got Bradford and the #10 pick plus a conditional pick next year, and the Rams got Foles and a 4th plus the #20 pick.... well Philly won that trade and Chip is in position to get his golden boy after all.

I can't imagine anyone in their right minds on the Rams side of the ball making such a deal. On the draft value charts, the jump from 20 to 10 is about a mid-second round choice. Unless Foles is that much better than Bradford, not sure how this makes too much sense.

Even so, the #10 pick won't probably be enough to fetch Mariota. If Chippy wants to trade down to #5, that'll cost him a mid-second rounder on the chart. But given the market on such a jump, it may take him a first rounder to get his golden boy. I'd just as soon try and deal with someone like Cleveland for their first rounders.

If Chip got the #10 out of this deal its a calculate risk. He can now afford to wait until draft day to see which way other teams are leaning. If the Jets are out of the hunt for his boy, he can just sit back and wait for his turn WITHOUT having to make a trade with a division rival which is going to cost him more than it normally would.

And Foles is that much better than Bradford because he is a pocket passer who is NOT coming off his second knee reconstruction.

And Foles is that much better than Bradford because he is a pocket passer who is NOT coming off his third knee reconstruction.

Then why did he trade for Bradford? If Foles was that much better, he could've used him as trade bait in a deal, say, with the Jets.

The reality here is pretty stark for Chippy: no deal, and he's stuck with either Butt Fumble or Bradford as his starting QB next year.

If Chip is looking to deal that #10 overall pick to Tennessee or Jacksonville, that's going to require a first rounder next year and a second this year. I'd also say that's what we should ask for if he's trying to trade with us for our #5 pick (though point value differential is somewhat lower for our selection).

Either way, I don't see the sense in this. It's either Butt Fumble/Bradford at QB or bleeding high draft picks to add Mariota to the troika of QBs he already has.
