In a 35-keeper, IDP/PPR league. I have the first pick today in the draft. I'm on the fence.

The highest scoring DL/LB scored almost 200 pts, many in the mid 150's. The highest scoring WR scored over 300, but many scored over 200. I already have JJ Watt on my team as one bookend, would be nice to have these two potential(Clowney) monsters on my D. But I really like what Watkins can bring to my team for the future as well. He may not score a ton this year but I think in future years he will.

What are your thoughts? Any other player YOU would target instead? It would be hard to convince me of someone other than these two, but I can be swayed.

While I don't particularly care for Watkins prospects of success for at least 2 years, but I'll always take potential offensive guys over potential defensive guys

Micro I have actually had to decide this very question my self in my dynasty league. After a long and hard and fun time researching I determined that ultimatly one was better than the other and here goes.

First Watkins, everyone thinks that he will be a top wr quite possibly in the same mold of a Julio or a Green. I have not heard anyone in all the articles I read (and there were a lot) ever compare him to Calvin. More to come.....

Now Clowney, in EVERY article I have read on him the word FREAK has appeared every-time, every gosh darn time in every gosh darn one I read.

I think Watkins has the chance to be a great wr one day but not the greatest of all time.

I think Clowney has the chance to be the greatest of all time!

All that said it was not even close for me. I fell in love with Clowney and I have been all in him since last year!!!!

Hope that helps! Any further questions on this matter please dont hesitate to ask as I have a lot of info on both of these guys!

I am a Clowney doubter. He is a physical freak, but I do not think he has the right makeup to be a true star. He will make highlight plays for sure, but I doubt he ends up being the best defensive player in this draft.

That said, I would take Carlos Hyde over everybody else. I think he will be a first round fantasy pick someday. While I am sure that a WR or 2 will end up being fantasy studs in time, it is much harder to predict which ones. Hyde is in a great situation and has shown that he has the talent to produce. Plus, it is easier to find WRs than RBs.

Only other players I would consider would be Sankey or Evans. Clowney would not be under consideration for me at the 1st overall pick. I think Watkins will be fine even if EJ is compete garbage and they end up having to replace him next year or the year after since they traded the 1st next year.

I have studied Clowney enough that I would only fear injury. Even with the possibility of injury, the fact that he is on the other side of the NFL's current (notice i said current) best defensive player means no double teams or triple teams like in college.

No offense Foot, but you also said Tavon Austin would get 2000 receiving yards last season.

I think that the NFL combine process drastically underrates the mental side of the game and from what I have seen, Clowney just does not seem like a very intelligent player and lacks the intangibles and the discipline necessary to be great. I still think he will be good, but he is unlikely to live up to the hype surrounding him.

I have actually heard that there are some groups out there trying to plug the holes in the combine process, but for now, combine freaks like Clowney tend to get overrated. The truth is, the best players have both the physical prowess and a mental edge. I just don't see it from Clowney.

Yea I was gonna point that too, but I really like the guy and have done a tremendous amount of work researching him. Keep in mind I have gotten at least on thing right in the past, that much I know for sure!

Even the "great" defensive players are only marginally better than the dozen guys behind them, they just aren't worth it.

In my IDP league we start more defensive players than O players thats the only way I know so my advice may be skewed a bit toward D players

I drafted Clowney in my lone IDP league earlier this week. I don't have time to research it, but my gut tells me that generally a top defensive rookie will live up to expectations better than an offensive rookie. (I'm thinking back to when Suh was a near-the-top rookie a few years ago.)

Keep in mind that Clowney is the starter and the defense will probably be on the field a ton. I have nothing against Watkins, but I have trouble seeing the Bills sustaining drives. I have even more trouble seeing E.J. getting him the ball accurately enough to catch it. (Sorry TKO.) Maybe Orton?

Another point is that if your league is on ESPN, Clowney is listed as both a LB and DE which is even better for IDP scoring! Because in IDP, the DE position is more valuable (since it isn't as deep), so if Clowney plays at the LB position and you can plug him into the DE spot.

Clowney hasn't even been the top rookie IDP coming off draft boards all summer. That has been Shazier or Mosley depending on the league in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. Huge reach if you take Clowney #1 overall.

Shady, that's a nice point about Shazier and Mosley, but in IDP, a top DL is worth more than a LB. IMO there's really no shortage of fantasy relevant LB. But since most DL score less than an average LB, a top-ranked DL is worth it.

I will add that I did miss the point that this is Micro's first pick. And if it is the first overall pick, I'd probably go offense.

Yea I think at this point I would have to go Ryan Shazier number 1 overall. He had like ten tackles in two quarters and Pitt never starts rookie lbs so the fact he is starting is an anomaly in it's self!
