I heard this once, "It's preseason for the refs too".

Man I hope so... Because in 2004 they pulled this BS and it hurt the league... NFL backed off eventually but it basically handed the passing TD record to Manning that was held by Marino for so many years... Q@#$^@Q#$ I get so tired of sports leagues wanting nothing but offense... Defense is a beautiful thing in sports ...

You're talking to a Steelers fan - so I feel your pain, trust me.

Offense = points and points = money.

Offensive records that stood for eons are falling to guys just out of rule changes.

The records set by Manning today will be broken by Rodgers tomorrow and so on it goes.

While I hate seeing the amount of flags thrown so far, DB(s) & WR(s) were getting away with far too much holding & pushing off last season. Too many jersey tugs which obstruct WR(s) & too many WR(s) pushing off on the break. These need to be called more often. You can put the blame more on the players than the officials.

We have seen this in years past. The league wants emphasis on particular calls to send a message. After the season starts they slowly calm them back down to the most obvious or egregious versions.

Wouldn't be surprised to see it carry over into the season, but by the 3rd or 4th game we should see this calming down.

If there's a hold call it... But the no touch rule is what scares me the most... You can't expect a DB to not put a feeler out, and that's the one they started calling back in 2004 like crazy and it hurt the game.... Holding is something the refs should call regardless no reason to emphasis it... JUST call it if it's a hold... But the no touch rule.... @#$^%@# stupid rule...

Multiple QBs had the best statistical season of their career in 2004. I believe that Daunte Culpepper, Trent Green, Jake Delhomme and Donovan McNabb all had huge years as well.

And at least as far as the TD record goes, Peyton crushed that last year so he'd still own it today regardless.

Right ... Peyton stands alone now ... He earned it... But in 2004 it was BS, and I'm worried the league is gonna do it to us again... There gonna be flag happy early on so hopefully common sense and players and coaches complaining will make them back off as the season roll's on...

My guess is the NFL wants to curb the whole "they can't call them all mentality" and will have refs call it hard early but back off when defenses start to back off.

typically I would agree, but being as I'm a Cowboy and Aggie fan...gonna have to say that defense isn't important at all. :L

As long as it's relatively consistent, I'll be happy-ish. Some of these calls have been ridiculously inconsistent, especially on the DB's.

they'll use it like every other rule. They'll call it when they feel like it. Which means Seattle will get sick of hearing the whistle long before anyone else does

We'll see about that. Seattle was getting plenty of attention from refs last year, might be nice to share some that attention.

It felt like hands to the face was called more often the DB holding or illegal contact. I was at a game Saturday & the amount of flags was ridiculous. It was killing the vibe of the game. At one point there were 5 flags within 6 plays.

its preseason and they do it every year. refs have to get their practice in as well.

If anything they should get rid of the 5 yards and automatic 1st rule. The D does a great job its 3rd and 22 and you get a ticky tack tug to the jersey or some other BS and it's a 1st down? Ridiculous....if anything give them the 5 yards and replay the down let the offense earn those firsts. That's my two cents.

It is not a new rule is the thing. They are just actually going to try and enforce it. Now my guess is once the actual season starts this won't happen as often. The NFL knows nobody wants to watch 25 flags be thrown a game. The refs are just told to emphasize it now in hopes that teams work to be better at the grabbing. It is like a new teacher starting out. They usually say to start out more strict day one then eases into it as the other way never works of starting out relaxed and hoping the kids respond.
