One Team: Kelvin Benjamin is a Mid-Round Prospect Updated May 5, 2014
By Charlie Campbell - @draftcampbell

Opinions are split on Florida State wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. Many acknowledge that the 6-foot-5, 240-pounder is a boom-or-bust prospect and his panning out in the NFL will depend greatly on the team he lands with. Some have dubbed him a late first-round pick, while others believe he'll be chosen in the second round. However, we've heard from a team that has graded Benjamin as a mid-round pick.

The team that has graded Benjamin as a mid-rounder said they don't like him at all as a player. They feel that he won't be able to get separation, and they basically think he can't run. That team said they view Benjamin as another Mike Williams. The former USC receiver was the 10th-overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft to Detroit, and he turned into a huge bust because of a lack of speed. That team believes Benjamin won't be able to get himself open against NFL cornerbacks.

That team feels that there are four true first-round receivers in Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandin Cooks. They have Marqise Lee on the bubble of the first round and rate Jarvis Landry as a solid second-rounder. This team could draft a receiver early, but they don't see Benjamin as being worthy of a pick in the first two rounds at the very least.

Benjamin has off-the-field concerns regarding maturity as well, and some teams are wary of bringing him into their locker room. Sources from different teams other than the one above feel that where Benjamin lands in the NFL will determine if he is a boom or a bust. If he goes to a weak environment without good leadership from veteran teammates, his wide receivers coach, offensive coordinator and head coach, he could end up out of the league before long. Conversely, if he goes to a strong organization with veterans and coaches who teach him how to be a pro, he could turn a productive player. One team that was cited as being a good fit for Benjamin was New Orleans. The Ravens have also shown a lot of interest in him.

Why would you hope that Dean?? After all if he sucks as bad as you have been saying, wouldnt the ultimate validation of your point of view be for him to fall to the Skins at 34 and the Skins pass over him?? If he gets picked before the Skins are on the clock, then e will never know what they might do. I expect them to take the Mulligan though and go O-line... but will be real interesting if Benjamin is there at 34 though dont you think?? :)

b/c if Benjamin gets picked before us other guys will drop to us. The 49ers and Seahawks NEED Wr not us. So its logical he would be the choice for them at the end of round 1. A part of me hopes Benjamin is there at 34 and we pass on him just to point out how illogical your argument was.

Plus aren't Robinson and Matthews better picks for the 49ers and Seahawks?

Again dude, how is my arguement illogical?? Do we not need a WR that is actually healthy and taller than 6'0"? You would have us take an OT with bad knees over a healthy WR.. where exactly is the logic in that??

b/c our team doesn't need a wr. I don't care how tall he is. If Gruden wanted a big Wr why did he sign Jackson in FA when he knew that he could get a big Wr in the draft? Look at he money that is tied up with Garcon, Jackson, and Roberts. Its just foolish to take any Wr at 34.

We do not have the doctors reports on Kojo. If he can be a starting RT for 4 to 5 years that is fine. Doctors are saying Kojo's knees are fine. You are still bringing up the combine report. That has been corrected.

MAybe because he isnt as short sighted as most Skins fans and realized that Jackson adds something to this offense that a rookie might not have. And signing Jackson does not preclude this team from adding a WR or two with some size. And again some doctors are saying Kojo's knees are a degenerative condition. Same as Kelly when he came out. If there is even a hint that he has degenerative knees you would be NUTS to waste a draft pick on him at 34.

You are not even considering the Roberts signing at all. There is more knowledge medically about knees now than when Kelly came out.

Dean... since when does a team go into the season and only have 3 WRs play?? You act as if Benjamin wouldnt see the field because of Garcon, Jackson and Roberts. So which is it, our coach is too dumb to find a use for a 4th WR, or just you would rather take ANY thing at 34 over a WR because you personally feel that we dont need any more WRs?

b/c Robinson and hankerson can fill the void at #4WR. You want a red zone threat get ASJ, not Benjamin.

I want a WR who can contribute no matter where we are on the field. Hankerson AND Gettis are both trying to recover from what is normally a two year injury. So to me one is a wash this season (Hank) the other one is a maybe at best.

Shark, you know I like KB3. But, I really don't think KB3 should have come out this year as a RS So. He needs major improvement in his route running, and honestly I'm a bit worried he might not make it as an NFL WR because of his lack of speed...now, as an NFL TE there's a possibility! But, not at #34.

Bottom line, it was financial decision for Kelvin to leave after his RS So. year at FSU...he, and his family needed the $$.

Hail to you my brothers and sisters, its good to be a REDSKINS fan!

We should draft Benjamin with the 34th pick no doubt. We should then use each other pick to also select a WR as well. Its the most important position on the field. We would be able to run 5 WR sets all game and beat everyone without a problem. We should carry 10-12 WRs on the roster at all times....I kid you not.

We need to focus on height in our WRs as well. Maybe Anthony Mix is somewhere around so we can sign him.

Mitz... I can see your point. But even if thats correct, whats best for his career?? going to some place like San Fran where he will be thrust into starting from day one, or coming here where at best he will be a change up player who will likely contribute, but wont be expected to start from day one.

Im fine with Robinson as well. I just dropped him out of the conversation because if we pick robinson over an OT, Dean will put out a hit on Bruce Allen.
