Seems like I remember a white guy named Riley Cooper causing quite a stir last off season when he said it. In fact pretty sure it was only behind the Hernandez story for popularity around the country.

He didn't say it on the field of play, which is what is being discussed. To say it on the field in a game would be career suicide, even you know this.

Once again - lets stop being purposely ignorant - this rule ONLY applies to the black players.

This is coming right before the new distribution deals. I'm sure the networks are putting pressure on them to clean up their language because it often comes through on the broadcasts. This is just the beginning.

we are the NFL. We hate cussing but promote gay sex freedom...:lame:

Saying the word is racist if you are a white guy.
Banning the word is racist because only black guys are allowed to use it.

Does anybody else see a problem here? Apparently, all white guys are racist.

Well it is actually logical... If you believe that Blacks use the word to take it back and make it their own, then being told by the MAN not to use it is almost as bad as having the MAN call you it...

But with that said, i do think black people overuse it and society gets overly offended when used by the wrong people...

Similarly, chop blocks only applies to white players.

I think this is an extension of the Martin Icognito case in that this is a safe and non-discriminatory workplace issue as provided by federal law. Hypocrisy really has nothing to do with it, racial slurs are deemed offensive no matter who uses them, this is simply the league attempting to cover their asses from the inevitable lawsuits that will arise. No surprise that the league is attempting to be proactive in heading off new potential litigious actions after the concussion lawsuits, the Martin case, etc. These guys don't want to cut the head off the goose that lays the golden eggs.

its actually a good compare contrast of what the NFL is focusing on and who they are trying to appease.

your 2 cells comment makes you the fool

I may sound like a homer but i really think sherman has a point. so words like fuck you, eat shit, suck my dick, you play like a pussy is ok but using the N word is what draws a penalty? we ALL know the white players arent using the word on the field so basically this word is to ban black players from using it....

my question is is it a penalty if two players on the same team say to each other congratulating them on a good play?

Me as a fan and having a family outing by going to a game,do not wanna hear it.

I have always taught my two kids never to use this type of word, let alone hearing from players out on the field.
Its horrible they gotta hear it sometimes around school or wherever, let alone hear it from someone they may idolize.
Although I really think this "n" word is less frequently used than it was when i was growing up.
Hopefully society is growing from it.

But again if we are to believe that black people use the word to make it their own, and black society uses it all the time, then how is it right for the white society to tell them not to use it??

You can say that it is a fireable offense in the business world or most full time jobs... But Business and most full time jobs follow the same society laws... Professional sport locker rooms and field play do not follow normal society rules... so how can the WHITE society take their word away???

They're just words? and if they disappear, what then? You don't think humans aren't going to just use some other word to convey a message? what then? keep banning words LOL. Everyone uses them, from the guy cleaning your toilets to the perfume lady at the mall and the president of the united states, past present and future. big deal. They can be used for all sorts of things. Screwing around, to convey seriousness :) or to try and put someone down.

Teach your kids how you want them to behave, and sooner or later you're going to have to teach them that not everyone thinks exactly the same way you do and they're going to have to learn to deal with that too. It's called life. It comes with success and failure, highs and lows, exhilaration and disappointment. Some words yelled at a game should be a pretty low priority in the grand scheme of things

I think you all are missing the possible application of this rule. I agree with Sherman ten-fold. This would absolutely be racist if this rule were implemented. How many times is this word used between two black guys in a playful boys-club-type manner? I would be willing to wager that it is a shit ton more often than it is used as a derogatory comment. Does that make it right? absolutely not. Fuck those N.... oh shit, I almost said it. Naughty naughty.

In all seriousness though. This rule is already essential on the books. If you are using derogatory comments against someone, then you are already going to be flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. If they implement this rule then those black guys bantering with each other will also be flagged even though no ill-will was meant by the comment

I agree it is racist because this is how most black guys talk to one another. You wont be hearing a non black guy say this much during a game so it will completely target black guys. It reminds me of going to a bar where anyone that wears clothes that black guys normally wear will be banned from the bar. Sherman has a point and that point is its targeting a specific race. This is racist and the rooney rule is also racist.

Hmmm - why don't you tell that to Riley Cooper? Really - is it that difficult for these guys to refrain from using this term for 3 hours 16-20 times per year? After a few flags are thrown I am sure that the message will be clear & the usage will disappear.

Honestly - can some of these guys be bigger babies? Some of these primadonnas act as if they should not have to abide by any rules or code of conduct. They simply need to grow up & someone like Sherman should just learn to shut his mouth already. He is a great player & smart to a degree but lacks common sense in other areas. I hope that his fifteen minutes of fame ends relatively soon.

Please. I guess that people who fought for civil rights and went through major troubles want to see someone fight the cause so that black players can use the N word on the playing field but only if it is directed towards each other. That is really a stretch and some of these points defending this stance are laughable.

It's not a stretch at all.

99% of the usage of that word will be black players referring to other black players. That by default makes it a rule targetted to specific players, making it discrimination.

I have no problems with us removing that word from the human language. What I do have a problem with is poorly conceived rules that are discriminatory in nature and practice.

We aren't talking about banning all offensive language. We're talking about banning ONE word. So if I was in the league, and called a hispanic player a wetback, I wouldn't get flagged. Or a jewish player a kike. Or whatever slur I choose is A OKAY as long as we dont' say ****er.

That's just inane and stupid. And NOW we're asking officials to spend time not only looking at actual rules violations on the field, but to be listening to every discussion and word every player says.

I'm sorry, but it's moronic. The rule has no place in the sport. The ONLY solution if you're going to implement this is to ban ALL offensive language, which is basically impossible.

The idea that some of you think guys can be fully emotionally into the game, and be Ward Cleavers at the same time, is laughable.
