I just watched "The Butler" last night. It was used there. Was not an issue - in context.

It would have lessened the message if removed.

Is it's use on the field acceptable? I'm not of the mind to tell blacks what to say to each other.

I never will. I've had various friends try to tell me it was OK, but I believe the word is harmful when used by anyone under almost and circumstances. I will say that historical films of that era using it to show the damage is acceptable, but any other use is damaging.

But a penalty for it among players is terrible.

I was much younger at the time, JDM. Now that I am older, I just won't. I have different kinds of relationships with my many black friends. You are right, I wish it would just go away. It won't but I won't use it.

It was a little different when I was a young man and we were brash with big mouths and had fun at it. Much like your description of the "anything goes" in the locker room. I hold myself to a higher standard these days.....

I've only ever used it when quoting someone / something (Song lyrics, films, whatever), or when explaining a story about it to someone (eg Samuel L. Jackson trying to get that reporter to say it), and then generally never in public.

Having played most sports, I played them with quite a few black kids/guys. None of them ever called me a honky that I remember, but if me and one of them happened to mix it up, they would always resort to calling me a "sorry-ass white boy." It was used in a derogatory manner and always got to me.

If racial slurs are going to be 'outlawed,' so should any reference to a persons skin color. Imagine if I called that same guy a "sorry-ass black boy." I'd be in for a fight...against all of them.

There's also going to be an issue around the audible level of the slur. It's gonna have to happen very close to a ref before he can claim not to have heard it and I got a feeling they're going to try not to hear it. How about the first time that one's deemed to have caused a late game loss?

White never wrote crap about Sherman, and that's why Sherman applauded him/patted him on the back after he scored a big TD against Sherman.

The N word isn't softening. It is unacceptable plain and simple. It has a long history of being used to refer to people as property that can be used, abused, and thrown away at will. Every use propogates that meaning.
