There's an article on ESPN that talks about which crew is going to get which championship game assignment and how many penalties each crew called this season. The Hawks vs. Niners will get Gene Steratore's crew, who called 210 penalties this year, which is middle of the pack. Steratore's crew called 29 coverage penalties (the high was 52 and the low was 19), 36 offensive holding penalties (high was 55, low was 23) and 25 unsportsmanlike penalties (high was 48, low was 18). So based on the numbers given in the article, how physical these two teams are (particularly against each other) and the notion that officials tend to let more things go in the playoffs than they do in the regular season, what kind of game do you guys think we're gonna get this weekend?

I don't think we'll see a ton of flags, but if the chippiness gets out of hand, we might see more unsportsmanlike penalties than usual.

By the way, the AFC Championship game gets Tony Corrente and his crew for anyone interested. Here's the link:

As long as the niners dont get bailed out on 3rd down with bogus PI or defensive holding it will be ok.

That's my biggest wish for the game. Don't bail them out on stupid PI calls, but the damn shame about the nfl is EVERY incomplete pass their WR, QB and Head coach will be screaming for a PI.... hope the refs hold their ground.

Other request, you know theres gonna be woofin after the plays. Just don't call the personal foul on one guy, ala last week where Boldin got away with a head butt but the panther muderline didn't...........

That was BS, I knew the Panthers were not going to win when that happened.

This.

I believe PI and defensive holding gets called too much in the NFL. Let these guys play. IMO it should only be the blatant and obvious PIs/Holding calls that should be called.

I actually liked last weeks officials I thought they called a pretty good game. Hopefully that's what we get Sunday and hopefully in the Superbowl if we are fortunate to win.

Yes... and the biggest problem I have is that the receiver will wave his hand in the air with every little contacts being made and a LATE PI/holding flag will fly because of it. :L

Except the fumble that they ruled was down by contact, even though the only one that contacted him was the turf monster, otherwise I agree, they did a decent job.

that was a HUGE blown call.....i dont see how they make that call there. they OBVIOUSLY didn't see down by contact,,, casue it didn't happen. So let it play out, then review it... when you go DBC you can't review.....infuriating in such a big game.

This is the down that Harbs will be in the refs ear, let's just hope they're smart enough not to buy into is crap and let the players play.

I like Gene Steratore. Is it just me though or does anyone else think he reminds you of an old school crooner that could have hung out with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra? Something about his accent, but it always sounds like he's going to burst out into a Harry Connick Jr. song.

Why? Your DBs can play the same way, so they should do the same, right?

well they don't... I agree they could and should do the same however, non-SF homer, the DBs in Seattle have gotten away with the mugging beyond the allowable distance all year while other teams have been penalized or been penalized for minimal contact...

it be no problem for me if we do it n get away with it as Seattle would... if the flag aint thrown for one side then it shouldn't for the other... unless its straight out interference.

I want to clarify before hell rains in, the Seattle secondary is good/great... thats no issue..

but from my POV as well as many others(non SF), they've blatantly mugg/hold more times than other teams without being called on it...

in fact they should just abolish the stupid rule...if they're not enforcing it why have it?

That we hold more than anybody else is complete bullshit.

You are aware that defenses are allowed to hand check right? Or bump and block within five yards?

The fact is, they really are just that fast and strong, and I am tired of hearing all this bullshit about how they just hold a lot.
