Here’s what Gruden said about why he hired Hilliard: “He knows the receiver position as good as any. He knows the slot and outside receivers. He was here two years ago and I know the players had a lot of respect for him. He was in Buffalo and for whatever reason it didn’t work out there. I had him in the UFL and worked closely with Ike and I know he’s a standup guy and will get the most out of his guys. That’s all you can ask for. I know Ike will do that.”

Washington Redskins quick takes: Coaching staff - ESPN

another Bucs connection ... starting to get comical

Is anyone else curious/concerned that McVay is both the OC and QB coach? Or that Gruden is the HC and quasi OC also? I think RG3 needs a dedicated QB coach that can help him with improving his fundamentals. It concerns me that we have 2 new guys to their coaching positions and they may be putting too much onto their plates.

The way i see it ... McVay is the QB coach, Gruden is the OC, and Gruden/Hass/Morris are going to HC by committee. They just give each other the titles to confuse us. lol

I hope you are wrong! if we have a 3 person HC committee, that means we don't have a HC. Recipe for disaster.......

Maybe you're right.........maybe not. This is unprecedented in the NFL, but let's look at it with a more forgiving eye.

The amount of time that some coaches dedicate to a team, takes a whole lot of time from family and rest.. Some spend uncounted hours working to find that little edge which spells winning. Let me ask you something. If the teams preparation was sound, could be accomplished in a lot less time and the results were the same....winning, would it matter??

I believe that what we're seeing will eventually become the norm. A HC who is not so locked into "doing it all" himself and instead spreads the work out to trusted associates so that with rest and relaxation he and his staff will.....just like his players, come into games sharp and less subject to mental mistakes because of fatigue.

In theory, I get it. In practice, it would take a very committed and in sync team. Seeing as Gruden is a 1st year HC, just concerned that he doesn't really understand what it means to be a HC and is just reverting to what he knows......OC, leaving a potential leadership vacuum.

Not for nothing, but Gruden has been a HC before. Just not at this level of the game. Won two titles doing it too. Sorry, Im a Florida boy these days with season tickets to the Predators. He was a hell of a coach.

Granted. Tells me he understands the Xs&Os. But being an NFL head coach encompasses a bunch more, starting with the press on a daily basis. He may be fine, just a concern, that is all.

Just curious - do you enjoy watching those games or is it really just background noise or a way to kill time? My brother once called me from one of those games in LA & it sounded like a freaking WWE event not a football game.

Really all that we can do is give the guy several years & judge him by the results. Thank God Gibbs I was during a different era. As you may recall he started out 0-5 and was a relative unknown. In today's media driven era people would have tried to run him out of town ASAP (with or without Snyder).

I agree.

Gibbs also had a bit more patient coach and a very supportive GM.

McVay is the OC and the QB coach, and he actually said that Jay Gruden will be calling the plays..but he'll be there and help Gruden when need to.

Actually its a fun way to kill two hours. And for $100 bucks for the season its a decently priced way to have 4-6 nights out without breaking the bank. Also you see some pass plays in arena ball that are out right spectacular. Catches that IF they were made in the NFL you would wonder what kind of drugs the guy was taking to be that limber.

"The Redskins' 0-5 start in 1981 under first-year coach Joe Gibbs..." on NFL Films - YouTube

Check out this description of Gibbs first season in 81. It kind of confirms your pts (although I would not necessarily go that far regarding Beathard since the two of them were at odds at times).

The last half of this is interesting since he states that one of the key factors was Theismann's willingness to put aside all outside interests to focus on the Redskins. People who were around then perhaps tend to forget that Theismann was also a pain in the rear & somewhat of a distraction. Hopefully - RG3 will be on board in a similar way such that he contributes to an improved product on the field.

BTW - could you imagine how Theismann would react in the current era with non-stop media, Twitter, etc. Yikes!

Thanks. Might have to check it out someday although there are no Arena teams anywhere close to my current location.

This is a concern of mine as well, not because it being done now, but rather after going through the last 3 seasons of experiments, at WR, OL, LB, ST, HC/GM, DL, et. al.....I am a bit leery but want to give benefit of doubt to the new regime.
