UWs Potential coaches

Hey guys. A poster at http://www.uwdawgpound.com/ is releasing a summary of possible candidates. I'm going to repost them here.

JIM MORA

Career Path: GA'd at the University of Washington under Don James. Spent over 20 years in the NFL as an assistant and eventually a head coach at Atlanta and then Seattle. Compiled a 31-33 record as a pro head coach. Returned to college at UCLA two years ago, and has gone 18-8 there.

What's To Like: Mora clearly holds the position of head coach at the University of Washington in the highest of esteem. He wouldn't use it as a stepping stone; it's a destination job for him. He took over a UCLA program that had been lifeless for over a decade and quickly created a buzz. Defeated crosstown rival USC both times they matched up. Aggressive on the recruiting trail, and already recruits well in the state of Washington. Did an impressive job of filling out his coaching staff in what was essentially his first college coaching stint. His ability to relate to young players is said to be second to none.

Reasons To Be Cautious: Is he the beneficiary of a weak Pac-12 South? He is 9-1 against his division opponents at UCLA, but that record drops to 3-6 when playing teams from the much tougher Pac-12 North. Is winning 18 games in two seasons at UCLA really that impressive? There's always talent there, and one could argue that he underperformed in his first season with a puzzling blowout loss to Cal, losing back to back games against Stanford, and getting run over by Baylor in the Holiday Bowl.

Why He'd Be Interested: He'd get to coach at his alma mater. It's his self proclaimed dream job. The facilities at UW far outstrip UCLA's. The home environment at Husky Stadium destroys the one at the Rose Bowl, which is an eternity away for students to get to. He'd be getting a pay raise. Brett Hundley may be going to the NFL after this season. A pay raise is in line. He'd be moving from a school that has basketball as its #1 priority, to a school that holds football above all else. Scott Woodward has shown to be a far more competent athletic director than Dan Guerrero.

Is It A Good Fit: Unequivocally, yes. At a time when so many schools are beholden to hiring a guy with ties to their school or a previous coach, Jim Mora fits that bill for the Huskies. But he does it in a way that makes sense, rather than attempting to shoehorn a guy into a slot just because of his pedigree. Mora is a defensive mind, which resonates with the history of the Husky program, and would be welcomed back to Montlake with open arms by the majority of the Husky community.

DOUG NUSSMEIER

Career Path: Started coaching QB's in the CFL. Coached QB's at Michigan State under John L. Smith for three years. Coached for the St. Louis Rams in the same capacity. Returned to college to become offensive coordinator at Fresno State for one year before becoming Washington's offensive coordinator for three seasons. Left Washington for Alabama where he helped win a BCS National Championship in 2012.


What's To Like: Been a coach on the west coast recently, so he still has recruiting ties to the region. The offense he helped lead in 2011 was by many metrics better than the one that we saw this season. Learned "The Process" under one of the greatest college football coaches to ever walk the sidelines. Washington's offense took a marked step backward immediately after his departure.


Reasons To Be Cautious: No head coaching experience. How much of Alabama's success was due to Nuss, and how much of it was the talent he had at Alabama? The same concern many had of Sark was that he was great with 5 stars at every position, which is what Nussmeier had with the Crimson Tide. Would Washington be a stepping stone if he's successful when, say, Nick Saban retires?


Why He'd Be Interested: It'd be his first head coaching gig, with a bunch of players that he recruited. He's familiar with the administration, region, boosters and facilities. He's a west coast guy: born in Portland, played college ball at Idaho.


Is It A Good Fit: Only if you think that Steve Sarkisian was a good fit. The similarities are striking, and while he may have completely different results, a lot of people would be rightly skeptical of the hire.

NP. I'll repost them here as he releases them. Might not get through them all before a decision is made though. Sounds like Mora is contemplating an offer and we'll know sometime today.

JAMES FRANKLIN

Career Path: Coached lower division college football for four years before becoming the tight ends coach at Washington State under Mike Price. A stint at Idaho State lead to a long tenure as Maryland's WR coach, then to the NFL with the Packers for a season, also coaching wideouts. A couple of years coaching K-State's QB's (Josh Freeman) and coordinating their offense under Ron Prince before going back to Maryland to be their OC. Was the Head Coach in Waiting for Ralph Friedgen at UMD before ultimately taking the Vanderbilt position, where he has compiled a 23-15 record in 3 years.


What's To Like: A guy who is doing more with less. In his three years at Vandy, he has beaten Missouri, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Tennessee in conference play; all are schools with far more resources (and talent) than Vanderbilt has. Immediate results: took a team that was 2-10 the previous two years before his arrival, made them a bowl team in his first season and finished his second year with 9 wins and a #20 ranking. Will have taken Vandy to three straight bowls after this season -- they had never even been to consecutive bowls prior to his arrival. He's the guy everybody was afraid that USC would hire. Was a recruiting coordinator at Maryland, and his recruiting abilities are held in high regard.


Reasons To Be Cautious: Never finished better than 4th in the SEC East. Still not playing with his "own players" so there's the question of if he can sustain success over the long haul. Small sample size of coaching. Success in the SEC West came during a time when Florida and Tennessee were down. Does he have eyes on the NFL or a job like Texas?


Why He'd Be Interested: The University of Washington offers far more than Vanderbilt in terms of fostering a football program. He would be given the resources to compete with anybody in the country. Recruiting to Vanderbilt is difficult, as they have no natural recruiting base. A substantial pay raise would be in order. There's probably an easier path to a conference or national championship in the Pac-12 than in the SEC.


Is It A Good Fit: Franklin would be a good fit anywhere. So far he has done what nobody else in the history of college football has done in sustaining success at Vanderbilt. He's just 41, so he could become a legend at whatever school he wants to go to if he is as good a coach as it looks like he is.

Me too. I've heard he turned down doubling his salary.


So maybe he really was just joking around when he called UW his dream job. If so he seems to talk out of his ass a lot so maybe this is a good thing.

Gary Pinkel

A lot of people like Pinkel for the job. An interesting thing that happened today during his media event is that the UW position came up and he promptly cancelled the interview. May or may not have meaning. Maybe he got pissed they were so stupid to bring it up.


I don't know if I want Pinkel. He seems to have issues. Recent dui and I can tell he's a booze hound just like Erickson was.

Still. He's done a fine job with Missouri and has ties out this way.

Disappointed to hear Mora won't be coaching here but I applaud him for sticking with the UCLA program unlike Sarkisian. It's easy to accept your "dream job" but I think it was probably the right decision by Mora.

Pelini knows Washington AD Scott Woodward well and as noted in this article from the Seattle Times in 2010, Woodward said he would have considered hiring Pelini in the past. In other news related to Washington, there is no question that Alabama offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier wants the job.

A Nuss / Wilcox pairing with the Huskies would be formidable. Nuss as HC and Wilcox as assistant HC and DC.

Nuss is not only a great offensive coordinator, but he's one of the best QB developers in the NCAA. Bama QBs used to be glorified game managers before he arrived. The results = pass attack at Bama to go with their power running game and they have a lot of new hardware in the trophy case to show for it.

Problem is it appears Wilcox is headed to U$C.

I don't think hiring Nuss is going to change that. I figure the only way he stays at UW is if he is offered the head coaching job, which is still a possibility at this point.
