While I agree with the no call that was far from incidental. But wait, if Gronk was moving backward if he then attempted to move forward to catch the uncatchable pass and Kiechly was in his path wouln't that be incidental?

Sure, if Gronk ran into him, but Luke had him in a bear hug, big difference if you ask me. I agree it was not PI, Mike Periera says it was, it was at least holding or illegal contact.

Would have been fine with defensive holding, but definitely not PI, Gronk wasn't going to come close to that ball, he was moving away from the ball before the contact, and made no effort to go back through the defender to get the ball.

If Gronk plants his foot, and tries to go back through the defender, he gets the call. Instead he just keeps drifting with the defender out of the back of the end zone.

Oh well it can't be undone so I guess it's all moot.

It does appear as if he plants his right foot but is in the grasp of Kiechly at that point. I still don't think he could have gotten to that ball.

He plants yet doesn't make any attempt to move in the direction of the ball, he plants and just fades away.

He tried. But Keuchly had leverage and pretty much form tackled him (short of actually bringing him to the ground) at his hip. You can't fight back through a defender with that much leverage.

I hear what you are saying, but like it or not, he isn't gonna get a PI call there without a concerted effort to go and get the ball. No matter what Keuchly did, how much leverage, Gronk never tried to go get the ball.

you & I must be seeing different replays because i saw a guy wrapping both his arms around gronk and hindering his movement.

-textbook example of illegal contact and/or holding

I didn't claim it wasn't a penalty, just that it rarely gets called in that last play heave to the end zone situation.

Yes he did. He was mostly off the ground but tried to plant and drive back. He literally had no ability to drive his legs at all.

Looked to me more like his own momentum carried him back. Would have been extremely difficult to switch directions like that to make a play on the ball even if Keuchly wasn't there.

Don't agree, his own momentum took him where he was going, he didn't do any plant and go back for the ball in any way.

He did indeed plant his right foot, but there was no way he was getting to that ball. I am not sure the ball wasn't terribly underthrown by Brady.

If you don't make an attempt to move to the ball, the plant is useless.

Yes, I agree, terrible throw.

He def planted to go back, but he just did not try hard enough. Had he pushed his way forward and was knocked down, the play would have stood at PI, it is prob easier said that done. I kind of had a feeling it was a come back route, he just never got back...LOL

It may be useless but IMO he did plant. And I really don't understand why Brady threw the ball to front of the endzone and low. If he puts that ball up and let's Gronk go and get it, the refs make that call.

That's just it though...he didn't look like he was trying to fight through the bear hug.

^^^^^^this^^^^^^^

And it's Brady's fault for not putting the ball where he should have. If he did, there's no question the ref throws the hankie and give the Pats a chance to win the game.

I've been watching football all my life and I can't count the amount of times I've seen no PI on a play where a ball sailed over the head of a potential WR.

Calls happen

The referee determined the ball was uncatchable.

It wasn't some egregious thing. It was probably catchable, but those guys are 2 feet away.

We are watching on 2-dimensional tv sets.

from 2 feet away, if they say it was uncatchable.... you just got to deal with it.

It was probably interference, but the Patriots still would not have automatically won.

They get one more play is all.

My question is where was the ref that should have seen Gronks arms pinned to his sides while being pushed out of the endzone while the ball was in the air?
