Calls happen

The referee determined the ball was uncatchable.

It wasn't some egregious thing. It was probably catchable, but those guys are 2 feet away.

We are watching on 2-dimensional tv sets.

from 2 feet away, if they say it was uncatchable.... you just got to deal with it.

It was probably interference, but the Patriots still would not have automatically won.

They get one more play is all.

jmo...there's a very slight chance it was catchable, the other tidbit the officials were working with was the underneath defender...he was in perfect position to defend it...even if Gronk were not touched, there's no way he would be able to go thru the underneath defender....I thought it was a good no call.

The underneath defender couldn't have got there if Gronk wasn't pushed multiple yards backwards.he would have had to fight through Gronk.

Very debatable, But what is not debatable is that NE was getting call after call. Especially when they needed it .
Which spurs me on to start a thread.

Bullshit. There was a lot of flags on both sides and every single one was earned.

That's the way I saw it too. Gronk could have made a play on it but he would have had to go through the defender who undercut the route and made the pick. As others have posted, players get mugged routinely in that last gasp pass situation and PI is rarely called. He should have kept the flag in his pocket.

you guys are getting too worked up on PI.

it was clearly defensive holding or illegal contact neither of which are required for the ball to be catchable. those penalties are called even on run plays or when the ball is thrown at least 20 yards away.

this was a clear case of the refs cowering to the home crowd. if that same play happened in the 1st quarter it would get called every single time.

Yeah but it didn't. It happened on the last play of the game in the end zone when that call rarely gets made. Not saying that's necessarily right but it's the way it is. It's pretty much anything goes on that last heave.

you & I must be seeing different replays because i saw a guy wrapping both his arms around gronk and hindering his movement.

-textbook example of illegal contact and/or holding

According to Mike Periera the only thing they could have called there was PI because the ball was already in the here. Defensive holding can only be called prior to the pass

it looked an awful lot like the illegal contact started before the ball was in the air

Right call the ball wasn't catchable.

It's nice to see the Pats not get the calls from time to time like they have for about a decade now.

Hey, the ref could always come out and say, "I misinterpreted the rules" like Bilichick did.

Twice.

lol so if the ball is not catchable you're now allowed to grab and hold the offensive player?

No bigger joke than claiming to know with certainty the outcome of a game before it's even begun, something the OP consistently claims to know.

Bad call IMO. Of course the Pats are my local team so I would side with them anyways but just the replay and the picture posted here proves something should have been called either Holding or PI. In either case the Pats would have had the ball within the 5 yrd line and a chance to win versus game over.

Was a great game though. Love games that come down to the wire.

Idk about that...I don't want to get too much into hypothetical here, but I felt if not held Gronk at best would have been able to maybe break up the pick. From the angle I saw because it was really an underthrow, or back shoulder throw the underneath guy had the best position on the ball regardless of whether Gronk was held or not...Gronk would've had to change direction pretty suddenly to have any real shot at the ball.

The p.i. call on the field was definitely the right call...the non catchable pass decision to waive off the flag was also the right call imo.

Do you know that sometimes PI isn't called because the ball isn't catchable? If the ball sails 10 yards over the receivers head they don't call it because the ball couldn't have been caught anyway.

Same thing.

Ball was underthrown by a lot.

So how about you blame Tom Brady for throwing it short instead of to his guy like he should have. That's what's lost in all this...if Tom had put the ball anywhere near Gronk, it's PI.

So Tom threw the ball way short and still wants PI? Sounds just like him.

This is how I see it too. I just don't think Gronk could have gotten to that ball and I damn sure don't think he would have beat the defender to it. Maybe Brady was throwing to a spot or maybe he just made a friggin horrible throw. You put that ball up high and that call happens wihtout the change.
