Apparently the league has made it clear that read option QB's can be treated like runners even if they don't have the ball, I assume once they leave the pocket. I think it makes a lot of sense but I think its going to limit the effectiveness of the read option.

PTI talked about this today. They read the rule out loud, and it states that once you make the fake to a RB out of the shot gun, you have given up your right as a passer and are fair game.

It will limit the effectiveness to a point but not to an unfair advantage point.

It would be an unfair advantage to treat them like a QB all the time. That would also revolutionize the NFL to making a Vick type Qb mandatory imo.

i feel like they still will protect the QB.

Correct me if im wrong but this is the same thing as faking any handoff out of the shotgun...or you do handoff out of the shotgun...........and you still see junk called

If Tom Brady takes a snap out of shotgun, fakes a handoff and is crushed making a read downfield, you bet your ass the field will be covered in yellow flags. If the QB is in the pocket and passing, they're gonna treat him with the same rules whether it was a fake read option that became a pass or not.

If what you're saying was true, a QB could fake and bootleg out of the pocket to pass, get demolished on a hit and it would be fair game. That's not gonna happen in Mr. Goodell's NFL

Well for one, for all the talk that guys like brady and manning get more roughing calls, every time someone looks at that (like Mike Pereria did a couple of years ago) they actually end up near the bottom of the list.

If what you are saying is that guys like brady aren't going to tuck and run it very often, of course you are right. But I think they are trying to be pretty clear that once you start running with the ball you are no longer a qb and get those protections and that is pretty significant for everyone.

I think it's more they are saying that if you are carrying out a fake like you have the ball you are considered a runner and are fair game even if you don't actually have the ball. If a guy runs out of the pocket and squares up to pass he's still going to be considered a passer.

I know I am a Redskins fan and all, but like a previous poster mentioned, I don't think it's going to change a whole lot of what is going on. Guys were still hitting RG3 last year and treating him like a runner. I think the rule is more of a clarification. Can you see Peyton, Brady, Brees getting crushed when they don't have the ball and the league being OK with that?

I think that is pretty much mostly right, although a lot of people would argue that QB's have typically been treated differently than running backs when they are acting like one. Remember that hit harrison had on McCoy a couple of years ago that stirred up so much controversy? I am not sure that would be as clear cut today given the NFL's clarification. We will see.

I'm sure that they'll get 'crushed' a couple of times - at least until the league makes it clear just how they actually mean to rule on such hits.

It really depends on what they are doing I think. No one in the nfl wants guys like peyton or brady to get hurt and there is no question that the rules are geared to keep guys like that healthy because its in the best interest of the league, but brady and manning still get hit an awful lot and have both suffered serious injuries and stats show that they statistically are near the bottom of the list of roughing the passer calls. The biggest reason for that is that they get the ball out of their hands so fast but they certainly get hit hard every game.

Peyton or brady don't run with the ball very often so I agree it isn't going to affect them as much as RGIII but I think the league is trying to make it clear that if you are acting like a runner, your going to get treated like a runner, no matter who you are.

Good call. It makes sense and offsets the rules that so much protect the QB. One thing is staying in the pocket; it is a whole different story if you're going to pretend you are a RB. If you stay in the pocket, a pat on the buttocks should be enough to make you down.

And I agree with this.

All QB's should be treated equally. To give read option QB's extra protection would be an unfair advantage.

Not surprisingly, the HC of the 49er's is upset.
