The Cupcake Rule.
If you insist on scheduling cupcakes to start your season you must not play your first stringers. Maybe not even your second teasers.

This way you won't have to defend yourself for cupcake abuse.

The whole purpose of scheduling a cupcake is to involve the players in a real game since no exhibitions are played in college.

You start the team with an easy win so they can gain confidence, encourage the fans to continue to support the team and show up for home games.

You also keep alive the hope of running the table, and wind up playing in the nc game.

Then why didn't they do this in the '70s and '80s? Seems to me to be something that started somewhere in the 90's.
