Last Night I was talking to some USC alums at the Kings game and they were talking about some chat question about USCs walk on academic scholarship players and they said USC had at least 3 players in the secondary that were going to walk on with academic scholarships this year.

Anyway any of you recruiting buffs can track these type of things?

I know USC wont get any big name recruits this way, but they sure as hell can fill out their roster with a bunch of 2 or 1 star guys who might be going to a Nevada or New Mexico or a school of that like that would end up at USC as a walkon with an academic scholarship.

Considering USC is the 6th best school in Div1A, and a Top 3 football program, I can see USC using these types of scholarships very effectively over the next 2 years...

Not to hijack the thread, but no, it isn't. Everyone knows US News completely overrates private schools. Schools like UCLA, Michigan, and Virginia are definitely considered better, while Texas, Wisconsin, Washington, UNC, and Georgia Tech all have solid cases.

As for the issue on hand, walk-ons are fairly common at Wisconsin. Guys often choose us over MAC and other schools, and are given walk-on status with an understanding that they will get a scholarship after 2-3 years. Most do not get academic scholarships, as they are very rare here. I literally only know one person who got one, and he aced the ACT. I'd imagine that schools would be reluctant to use academic scholarships, because it sounds like a slippery slope that could likely lead to corruption. I'm sure that the NCAA carefully monitors them, as it would be an easy way to get around scholarship restrictions.

If you can find one of those depth chart PDF's, they often have classifications that might allow you to tell which players walked on and such. I don't know of a site that tracks them, but it is an interesting idea. At Carolina, we have had some key walkons on special teams earn scholarships. Marty Markett played up to starter at CB and got signed as an UFA, and OL Garrett Chisolm walked on and made all-sec (2nd or 3rd team).

Everything you said in the first paragraph was once true, in 1992.

USC already has 3 walking on this year at the very least. The NCAA Bullshit sanctions do not mention a limit in walk ons or academic scholarship players. This is how USC will not be affected by other peoples BS, at least in terms of numbers. Obviously USC will have to target guys who rather have a USC degree and less playing time than some other universities degree and more playing time(assuming everyone plays to potential).

In the long run I think this will be More Helpful to the team, as you mix in a lot more guys that will never be in the NFL or an All American but guys that can be good college players and push the better players.

I would just like to track these types of signings though...

I thought there was a restriction on these in that if an academic scholarship was given you lost a scholly so as not to create an atmosphere where a guy in the SEC with C's would get a full academic ride for being an apparent genius compared to his team mates.

As long as the person meets the requirements of an Academic Scholarship then the NCAA cannot stop a player from Walking On, this has been confirmed, as the NCAA has already cleared at least 4 players with Academic scholarships to goto USC and walk on this year. And its pretty clear that USC is going to do this to get up to 85 players.

I am guessing there is no place that list players that had Athletic scholarships to some schools but accepted an Academic scholarship to USC.

I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I know, for instance, a guy can't be on a baseball scholarship and be a walk on on the football team w/out counting against the 85 limit. Not sure if there is some type of restriction on academic schollies.

True, you cant use another sport to fill out your football team, but you can use football to fill out any other sports team for the school. For instance...

A football recruit can play baseball as a freshman and he would count towards the Football scholarship not baseball. But a Baseball scholarship player CANNOT play football for 2 years, if he does the scholarship is counted towards football.

There is no restriction on Academic Scholarships, in terms of what they can do. Also they count towards Academics Scholarships not Athletic ones, even if they have the intention of playing a sport all 4 or 5 years.

Yes, they count

This is my first post here, but hope to be a regular.

Anyway, I thought I'd clear something up. Academic scholarships count toward the 85.

If an athlete receives ANY aid from any scholarship be it academic, athletic, service, community, etc. he counts toward the 85.

If a player is a walk-on and receives aid, say from an academic scholarship, and is never named a starter, or never sees the field of play, then he does not count toward the 85.

Basically, if you get money and ever play, you count toward the 85.

15.5.6.3.3 Recruited Student-Athlete, Aid Received After First Year.
A recruited student-athlete (per Bylaw 15.02.8) who first receives athletically related financial aid after the student-athlete’s first academic year in residence shall be an initial counter for that academic year in which the aid is first received, if such aid is received during the fall term. However, such a student-athlete who first receives athletically related financial aid in the second or third term of an academic year may be considered an initial counter during the academic year in which aid was first received or the next academic year. In either case, the student-athlete shall be included in the institution’s total counter limit during the academic year in which the aid was first received.

15.5.6.3.4 Nonrecruited Student-Athlete Receiving Institutional Financial Aid.
A student-athlete not recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) by the institution who receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) after beginning football practice becomes a counter but need not be counted as an initial counter until the next academic year if the institution has reached its initial limit for the year in question. However, the student-athlete shall be considered in the total counter limit for the academic year in which the aid was first received.
