Maybe not fire them, but be okay with them leaving?

Interestingly the one person that most of assumed would be top of their list to interview I haven’t seen linked to Knicks yet.

Mike Malone.
Maybe it's because Malone is an awful lot like Thibs?

Havent seen it mentioned yet but people do realize that Kyrie very likely will never play another game for the Mav's right?

He just tore his ACL. He isnt going to play this coming season. And that is his final year of his contract in Dallas. At this time next year he will be a 34 year old coming off injury looking for a 6th man roll with a chance to win a ring.
He is expected to re-sign with the Mavs. There was a Tweet a few hours ago.

Yeah, I agree with that.

Different voice though.

Coaches like Thibs and Malone have shelf lives because they are tough on players.

Still likely the best option though.

ACL recovery is usually 8-9 months.

He will absolutely play next season barring a major setback.

Probably be on the court by January if not sooner.

Kyrie by reports is due back by the All Star game. At that point he is either a solid addition and mentor, or a trade piece that is rare in value. Both an expiring contract as well as a valuable piece for a contender.

Go look at the timelines of NBA players coming back from ACL injuries.

A couple of players come back in 9 months. Maybe like 15%. Most timelines are a year or more. At 33 to think that Irving is going to be on the short side of the recovery time is more than just wishful thinking. Especially when you realize that coming back too soon and not looking good could cost him millions, it is unlikely we will see him next year unless the recovery goes just gangbusters.

I have.

8-12 months is the timeline.

January is 10 months.

It is highly unlikely he sits out the entire season on a team that is supposed to contend now AND has a short window to do so.

And if Dallas merely extends him before he returns, his reinjury risk is greatly reduced.

Will he be the same player upon return?

That is a different question.

It was just a couple years ago that everyone talked about how Jamall Murray was going to be back at some point and he never made it back that 1st season and his timeline was almost identical to Irving in terms of when he was hurt and when he had surgery. And his team was playing in the playoffs and he still couldnt make it back and missed the entire season. And he was 10 years younger.

Unless we know that Irving has the HGH hook up (hi Lebron!....I kid, I kid), I wouldnt bet on him being back next season.

And this is the same knee he has had numerous different procedures on including shutting him down back in his Celtics days where he had to have hardware taken out of the knee because it was causing an infection.

So again. Anyone thinking a guy his age, with this injury, with his history is going to be on the short side of the recovery timeline is probably wishful thinking at best. Most guys who blow their knees out in Feb/Mar/April of the NBA season simply arent coming back the following season. And Kyrie has a lot of negatives working against him in his recovery to boot.

Every situation is different

You said most guys miss a year plus and then gave 1 example.

Knicks should hire Chris Jackson and move on.

ACL tears in NBA over last 10 years: | fb-ninja.com blog

Here's an old one. There is a more up to date one somewhere but I couldnt find again.

Notice how all the guys listed there are under 30 for the most part and the ones that arent ended their careers.

This is good info. Thanks.

None of those 30+ were playing anywhere close to the level Kyrie was when they got hurt.

Davis and Howard were close to the end before getting hurt.

I think for this one, ducky has made a good point. You are dancing around the fact he showed, that for most players they miss a lot more time than you are saying, even younger ones.

I agree.

And I still bet on Kyrie returning to play at some point next season.

Don’t see anyone on that list in a comparable situation.
