Looks like it's official that Barksdale won't be on the team. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Some <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Hokies?src=hash">#Hokies</a> men's hoops news: CJ Barksdale won't be on next year's team and who might replace Ben Emelogu on roster. <a href="http://t.co/HTCtWI0UDq">http://t.co/HTCtWI0UDq</a></p>&mdash; Hokies Journal (@HokiesJournal) <a href="https://twitter.com/HokiesJournal/statuses/487251707592581121">July 10, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

It's going to be a tough year with an inexperienced, but talented team.

The upside, though, is that the players will almost all be top-notch Buzz recruits.

sheeeit. Emelogu and Barksdale are two that i was really hoping would be back. Maybe Buzz's guys were coming in good enough to take PT from these guys?

I don't see how Barksdales minutes would have been in question as long as he listened to the coaches. We are thin there.

I'm not surprised about Barksdale. My guess is Buzz's style is a bit rough/strict for him. Barksdale had talent, but he always seemed lazy. I've heard that he walked away from the team at least once last year and had to be talked back by JJ. The rumor on Emelogu was that he may be struggling with depression, possibly related to the concussions that he never seemed to recover from last year. Maybe that rumor was started by some fans to lessen the blow of the transfer, I don't know. The transfer does seem odd though, because Emelogu had said that he really liked Buzz during the recruiting process and he doesn't seem like the kind of kid who would transfer based on potential competition. Best of luck to him in the future.

Well that blows. We definitely needed Barksdale's size. And a player with his skill set would have benefited from a coach like Buzz. I don't know his reasonings but looking from an outsider's POV, for basketball reasons his transfer makes little sense. He's a senior that will have to sit out a year so some schools might not take him since he has no eligibility left. Given our lack of bigs, he most definitely would have gotten playing time if he put forth even the slightest bit of effort. And if he's got dreams of being a pro (whether NBA or abroad), I would think you would definitely want to see what you can learn from Buzz, who has put several guys in the NBA in recent years.

Only good thing about this is Buzz now has 3 schollys for 2015 to go towards his rebuild.

Seems like as of now Barksdale's plan is to stay at VT and just give up basketball. But we know how that works (Wood).

I doubt that. Unless he has some kind of medical or personal problem, that would be a very stupid thing to do. Who gives up their last year of college ball just for the hell of it?

CJ apparently.

It is a bummer because we are so thin in the front court. And we will continue to be thin until Buzz recruits some bodies for us. I am disappointed that BE is leaving but we did recruit 3 top-20 SG this year. So that will be a numbers game. So I can see why he would want to explore another opportunity.

The NBA's Vegas Summer League has started and two Hokies are in it trying to make rosters. Jarrell Eddie is on the Wizards and Erick Green is on the Nuggets. You can track their games in the following link or watch them on NBA TV. For those that don't know, Summer League is for young guys to get minutes in an NBA atmosphere. It's composed of rookies, a few 2nd and 3rd year players, and guys looking to make rosters.

2014 NBA Summer League | Schedules, Stats, Scores and Highlights | Orlando: July 5-11 | Las Vegas: July 11-21 on NBA.com

First game Eddie had 8 pts (2-5 FG, 2-3 3pt) 0 rbs, 0 asts in 15 mins. Green was much better with 17 pts (7-11 FG, 2-4 3pts), 7 rbs, 4 asts in 31 mins.

FWIW, Eddie likely has little to no shot at making a roster. But Green, who was drafted by the Nugs last year but played in Europe, has a pretty good shot at making the Nuggets roster if he continues to play well.

SMU was pretty good last year. Probably a good move for Ben.

He's looked pretty good from what I saw of Summer League. Then again it is Summer League so its a waste to read too much into it. But I'd guess he should at least get a camp invite and be on their preseason rosters. And then hopefully he makes the cut.
