I can't imagine anyone is offering the multiple prospects the Angels would want for a several month rental.

huh?

especially given that he is a pitcher and a very good one it's extremely common for teams to deal prospects for that

the Tigers got 2 really good Jays prospects (Boyd and Norris) and a 3rd for David Price. and he can't hit.

And I doubt any team is going to try and trade for him when they know it's all but done he is headed to the Dodgers where he will sign a fat contract.

It's why the Dodgers didn't do much last offseason.

Like I said, no team is giving up 4 prospects or whatever the asking price was to have Otani for a few months and lose him this winter.

It’s a moot point now. Angels aren’t selling, they’re buying. They just acquired Gioloto last night from WSox.

Depends. I think a team where he would likely re-sign and could afford him would. For example, the Dodgers would definitely have done it. Yankees too.

A team like the Rangers should shoot their shot....they have never won a WS before and Ohtani could seriously help them towards that. If they won and he still walked....well worth it to get their first ever WS.

I think it was a big risk for anyone but the Dodgers. The winter may be different when people can make their pitches but I bet if you talk to every front office in the MLB and asked them where Ohtani is playing next year the poll goes overwhelmingly Dodgers.

So everyone else was looking at shipping off 3 of their top 5-7 prospects in their system plus at least one current major leaguer. What the Angels may have experienced is like back in high school, the hottest girl in school ended up single for most of the 4 years because most of the guys in her class felt like she was out of their league and wouldn’t even make the effort. I bet the trade offers for Ohtani were close to nonexistent. It might have been looked at as the most expensive rental in trade deadline moves in MLB history.

Or you could potentially cripple your farm for the next 3-4 years for a rental of 2 months.

For a while there, virtually everyone was saying that Ohtani to the Dodgers was inevitable and that might still be the case. I've noticed lately that there has been a lot less "Ohtani to the Dodgers" talk and other teams, specifically the Yankees and Rangers, are being mentioned. Could just be guys looking for clicks though.

I will say that now that it looks like it's going to be a bidding war, I like the Dodgers chances.

The Rangers could be appealing if someone explains to him America’s tax structure haha.

That will only matter to his grandkids with the numbers he's going to hit on this next contract.
I’m thinking he could get 10 years and 600 million. That would be insane but if you think about it, he plays two roles. He’s a top of the rotation arm (30 million) and an every day with bat with incredible power numbers (30 million). Now that I typed it out, I may have sold short. It could be 700 or 800 million. I think the number starts though at 60 million AAV.

Now that both leagues have the DH and with the numbers being talked about for Ohtani, it will be interesting to see if more pitchers coming up through college and the minors start focusing more on hitting. I know that there have been pitchers in the past who were pretty good with the bat but had to give up batting to concentrate on pitching.

That’s pretty interesting. Makes sense too. The younger generation always looks up and models after the stars of their youth. Ohtani has shown it can be done. Now others will try and reproduce that.

If you remember correctly the Browns had been dismissed from the bidding until they were the only ones to step up with a fully guaranteed deal. Let’s be honest. Cleveland has a reputation for being the place that QB careers go to die.
confident in saying no team was getting him without doing what the Browns did. anyone to blame it's Houston for giving him a no trade clause. Cleveland may have had that reputation but their coach at the time and still got a top 10 season out of healthy Baker.

Never mind the idea the Browns had trouble attracting FAs and/or had to pay more than other teams does not seem true.

Seriously? Never mind he's the best player in the league but the team who got him would also get exclusive negotiating rights to him for a few months.
