Didn't Davante Adams get tagged by the Packers last year then they traded him to the Raiders for 1st and 2nd round picks? Payne could be in the same boat.

no , we cant trade him while we have him tagged , technically he is still a FA , we have to sign him to a deal , and no a team like the bears can sign him then negotiate compensation other then giving up 2 1st rounders per CBA . we would have to sign him and then trade him which doesnt work because if he failed his physical with the new team we are stuck with the contract

You guys are talking about two different things.

1. On the tag if Payne negotiates with another team and signs a proposal Washington gets the choice between their first-round draft pick this year and next year OR matching that offer and signing Payne to the terms of that negotiated contract themselves.

2. Not wanting to give up two first-round picks for him another team can show interest and Washington would have to either wait until Payne signs for the tag amount (18M+) or actually sign him to a long-term contract BEFORE working out a trade for him. Payne cannot be traded while on the non-exclusive tag.
