Ive seen 3 docu's in the past couple weeks about St Helens, the iceland volcano & the supervolcano that supposedly blew Indonesia apart 75000 years ago ... i love me some volcanoes!!!

Did a road trip down there 3 years ago and its still just an amazing sight to see

I was in Medicine Hat, Alberta at the time and it didn't take long (I'd say between 2-3 days) before our vehicles were covered with volcanic ash from the eruption.

I saw a show about the volcanoes in the ring of fire and how a volcano blowing its top right into the ocean could create tidal waves 300 - 1000 + feet tall and is likely the reason for all the historical stories about massive flooding from around the globe. That was pretty interesting.
It was thought the largest tidal wave was to be around 32 feet tall caused by earthquakes at the ocean floor until some of these recent studies showed otherwise.

i just found it fascinating how a handful of scientists around the world were doing completely unrelated tests/research and they came up with different findings/clues which led them each to independantly pinpoint a catastrophic climatic event occurred 75000 years ago

Biggest Wave

The magnitude of the quake was about 8.3, although some sources say it was a 7.9, on the Richter Scale (a scale for measuring the magnitude, or amount of energy released, from an earthquake). Pretty awesome shaker. Well, shaker it was...it "shook" loose an estimated 40 million cubic yards of dirt and glacier from a mountainside at the head of the Bay, about where you're standing in the above picture. When the stuff went "kersploosh" into the water it created a massive wave that washed 500m high over the headland in the right side of the above picture. The tsunami inundated approximately 5 square miles of land along the shores of Lityua Bay, sending water as far as 3,600 feet inland, and clearing millions of trees.You can see the damage to the trees that were growing on the headland when the wave washed over the top of it - there were no trees left...wiped 'em clean off.

To measure the height of the biggest wave, all scientists had to do was look for the high water mark - that's the line where the water reached its highest point on the nearby land. It's real easy to find you just look for the uppermost edge of the damaged area (see photo at left). Then, they measured the elevation of the highest point on the high water mark to get a measurement of 500m high - the biggest wave ever measured.

I have to say that Limnic Eruption is the most bad ass of them all. Wasn't there a movie about this? I want to say Pierce Brosnan was in it, but I can't remember. I just remember it was a really bad movie, much like 2012.

My favorite was the "Schoolhouse Blizzard" - talk about your localized storm!

I was on the I5 coming back from holidays when Mt St Helens blew - about 35 miles away from the mountain. I saw the top come off of the mountain, and the cloud grow of course, but didn't feel a thing.

My family actually stopped for something to eat after watching it. the diner staff were all out taking pictures of the ash plume. we finished our leisurely meal and headed back on the highway... apparently we crossed the Tuttle river bridge with about 15 minutes to spare before a wall of logs and ash took the bridge out.

We had no idea of the magnitude of the thing until we got home. We saw the same diner on the news, covered in about 3 inches of ash.

That place looks beautiful.

After Mount St. Helens erupted, a class mate of mine had an aunt that lived relatively close by. She sent him a jar of ash, and for a day or two he was the coolest kid in 5th grade.
