Rivera is gambling on a few things here I believe.

1. He is betting that Wentz is the guy and that QB play picks up considerably.
2. He is betting that injuries won't derail the team again.
3. He is betting that underperforming players from last year step up...especially the DLine.

I would guess that Rivera believes 2021 went downhill due to the Fitzpatrick injury out of the game, COVID, and injuries to key contributers. It certainly seems like he wants to keep the band together and try again with Wentz at the helm. I personally don't think its going to work and his strategy makes no sense. He literally made no voluntary coaching changes which still baffles me.

True but you are leaving out that if Wentz fails we don't owe him any gmoney. We lose the two draft picks but that is the risk of possible getting a franchise QB. If it works the trade is minimal and its less than what we gave up for A. Smith. If it doesn't work which everyone on here thinks, you still start fresh looking for a new QB in Fa or in a BETTER QB draft. Now if we trade down this year and add 2023 picks, it just hedging the bets if Wentz fails. Plus losing Ionman and Settle was worth the risk of finding a franchise or good QB.

Im ok with taking this risk. We have done way worst things in the past.

The Giants didnt go deep into the first round when they traded with the Bears. So its possible to get a 1st rounder next year.
Ok, let's play this your way. Last year Chicago moved up 9 spots from 20 with the Giants. Using that very same metric this year (9 spots) Washington would have to trade with Pittsburgh sitting at 20. The Steelers simply don't trade up historically, the last time being 2013. It would be a monumental headline leading story if the Steelers traded up, especially as far as from 20th to 11th. Besides, they don't need a QB.

Your next team is Tampa Bay at 27 and while they don't need a QB , it's possible, albeit highly unlikely that they would pay such a heavy price to move up 16 spots for any of these QBs.

Finally, there's pick #32, Detroit, who already owns pick # 2 and could be looking to trade down themselves. NO other team below 20 needs a QB, so take a look at the 2022 draft order then get back to me with which team Washington has a chance to trade with.

The Steelers don't need a QB? lol. They are not all in on Trib. Plus, the whole Steelers organization was at Willis pro day. The Saints could trade up and the packers could trade up for a WR. So yes, there are plenty of possibilities for a trade down for us. The Steelers can do that same thing for Willis then what the bears did for Fields. So yes it's possible.

Ranked #5. #1 and #3 are understandable but not #2 and #4

I agree that it's a small price to pay but Wentz is NOT a franchise QB. Philly gave up on him, Indy wanted him out after a year, and no pundit out there thinks Wentz is a long-term answer. I will ask again, what does Rivera know that Philly and Indy did not? They have a much better offensive-minded staff that Scott Turner and Rivera. Turner has proven little to nothing the past 2 years. You are acting like its easy to find a QB. It clearly isn't or we would have done it by now. Perhaps the 2023 draft is a better QB class...we don't know at this time. Also, finding a QB in FA seldom if ever works out long term.

If we go into year 4 of the Rivera regime without a long-term solution at QB, he should be let go. You can't simply keep delaying finding a long-term QB year after year. The fact that the entire staff was at Pickett's pro-day should tell you something. I highly doubt our front office is smart enough to put up a smokescreen but maybe I am wrong. Rivera has done nothing really to move the needle talent wise since he got here. You are ok with taking the risk and that is fine. However, multiple NFL teams have parted ways with Wentz in his short career in the NFL. Common sense tells you that something is wrong.

RR brought in Del Rio and made the defense better. Even if Wentz doesn't work out this year I dont believe he will be fired. He tried to get Stafford and he tried to get Wilson. So the effort is there. This team has a very good chance to make the playoffs this year. Im taking the risk with Wentz. Im trusting Scott Tuner will get something out of him. If RR thought Willls was the guy he wouldn't have made the trade for Wentz. he would have done everything possible to get Wills on his team. If we can grab a 1st next year in a trade down that would be huge. Even a trade down to recoup picks would be smart right now. Its a deep draft for WR. IMO the Steelers want Wills in the worst way. I think they will overpay. For us, the draft starts at pick #6 to see what Carolina does. It will be too expensive for the Steelers, Saints, and packers to trade into the top 10. We should be open for business. FI we are forced to stay at #11 I have no clue right now on who this team will take.

the same argument can be made for the steelers with trubisky dean . you act like wince is special , he isnt he is run of the mill . he collapsed at the end of the last month of the season . the list of qbs better then him is like 15

If he is a top10-15 QB in the league this year that would be great!

Gruden did not have much better. He had Keenum and Haskins in 2019 and Smith (10 games), McCoy, Johnson and Sanchez in 2018.

Offense rankings by year:

Gruden/McConnell
2018 = 18 pts per game (29th in league)
2019 = 17 pts per game (32nd in league)

Rivera/Turner
2020 = 21 pts per game (25th in league)
2021 = 20 pts per game (23rd in league)

Please tell me why Turner got an extension and what he has proven thus far? The offense is roughly the same for points per game as under Gruden. I am seeing little to hardly any improvement. Turner is here due to nepotism...pure and simple.

Wentz might be more talented than the previously mentioned QBs, but that's not saying much at all. Most of his seasons average about 27 or fewer TDs. He only has had 1 season that which he threw at least 33 TDs. His average completion % is just 62%. This is far below average to elite NFL QBs.

Since 2018, his completion % has plummeted along with his play. His injury history is also a concern. I honestly cannot see why you think he "deserves" a chance or why you think he could be a franchise QB at all. The data just does not support this.

Does JDR make the defense better? 2020 was a great year but 2021 was a disaster.

Manusky (24.5 points average per game given up in 2 years)

2018 = 22 points a game given up (15th in league)
2019 = 27 points a game given up (27th in league)

JDR (23.5 points average per game given up in 2 years)

2020 = 21 points a game given up (4th in league)
2021 = 26 points a game given up (25th in league)

The data shows that JDR had an amazing year in 2020. However, compared to Manusky's final two years, JDRs defense averages about a point less per game. I believe JDR is a better DC of course, but the defense had a major backslide in 2021. Yes, we get Chase Young back, but no other changes have been made to improve the defense. Does this not concern you? No free agent upgrades and no coaches were shown the door.

Rivera is just not a great coach and his history shows just that. In 11 seasons as an NFL coach, he literally only has 3 winning seasons. You are free to double-check. Can you explain his lack of success? The sad thing is that he pretty much brought in the same coaches that got him fired in Carolina. Can you explain that one?

I have shown the stats and there literally is no reason to believe the following according to the facts:

1. Scott Turner will get something out of Wentz that Frank Reich/previous coaches could not.
2. Rivera can turn the team around and has a history of winning.
3. JDR can turn around the defense with the same coaches and same players from last year.

You can trust these coaches, but I trust the numbers.

JD and Samuel were hurt last year so why bother toting last year stats? It doesn't make sense, the guys didn't play a full year. JD is more than capable of being a #2 back. Im not worried about RB#3. MLB is the only major hole on this team. All the starters are set for this team. JSW is not depth at the DE position. We have Young coming off major surgery. So yes, the most important position on defense could use a boost.

Wentz was traded b/c of the Jax game last year. The owner wanted him out. The guy had a good year last year and if he does that with us we are a playoff team. TH is not a NFL starter. We UPGRADED at QB like it or not.

Look at our schedule we only play two big time QB's this year in Rogers and Watson. Plus its very possible we don't play Watson b/c of suspension. You can add Dak in there too but that's about it. I can see 10 wins this year b/c of a weaker schedule than last year.

Its not all doom and gloom.

McKissic played most the season, so his numbers do have relevance. All players play hurt. There is a difference between being hurt and being injured. Samuel gave it a go for 5 games and had 30 total yards of receiving?????

McKissic is not capable of being a #2 back. He is a 3rd down pass catching back...that is his role. I am not sure how many games you have watched. In 6 years as a pro, he still hasn't even broke the 1,000 yard plateau rushing . He is averaging 166 yards rushing per year. 7 RBs got over 1,000 yard rushing in just 1 year in 2021. McKissic is no #2 back as the numbers show. #2 RBs are more productive,

MLB is a major hole yes, but the rest of the starters are not set...nor should they be. Who is our slot WR? You seem to be overly confident in this team. Many of these players are responsible for back-to-back losing seasons. They couldn't even get to .500. We have a severe lack of talent on the roster.

JSW isn't the best player but throwing a high-round pick at DE is the most insane thing to do. We have Bradley-King and Toney as depth. Other positions are much weaker than DE. It makes no sense to throw yet another high draft pick at the DLine and neglect the rest of the roster. That is why we have losing seasons over and over again.

Wentz had an ok year last year. Wentz does not get us the playoffs. The defense is a mess and we have a severe lack of talent on offense. 2/5 of the OLine is new as well (starters). You are overvaluing Wentz and I am not sure why. Indy wanted him out badly.

It is fairly gloomy. We have the worst owner in the NFL. The man literally attempted to pimp out cheerleaders and he allowed a culture of disrespect and intimidation to thrive. Congress is investigating our team and top players (Stafford/Wilson) do not want to come to this dumpster fire. Sponsors are leaving left and right and nobody wants us to build a stadium anywhere close to them. We have a mediocre coach who thinks he is a pseudo-GM, a QB who some think is a savior who is on his 3rd team in 3 years, and a playoff win drought of 17 years. Outside of that...we are looking awesome!!!

I agree that it's not easy to find that guy at QB, but why be a dumb-ass and publicly over promise for two years in a row?

The efforts to get Stafford, and Wilson are laughable because they didn't factor the organization in as part of their offer, and this called for a significant overpay which ironically they weren't willing to do because of their nature. Note that they don't want to trade up for the same dumb-ass perspective on the organization and themselves.

So what does this overpay look like? The hell if I know, but this is Washington Commanders football, you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to know that you've earned that stupid tax.

Turner received that extension because his offensive output is very much in line with what it's been historically. Washington loves consistency!! :D

You ran KC out of town for being exactly that

No, KC wanted to be paid the highest in the league for an avg to good QB. Plus he wanted to leave don't start this shit again. Wentz is not the highest paid QB in the league.

Gruden did not have much better. He had Keenum and Haskins in 2019 and Smith (10 games), McCoy, Johnson and Sanchez in 2018.

Offense rankings by year:

Gruden/McConnell
2018 = 18 pts per game (29th in league)
2019 = 17 pts per game (32nd in league)

Rivera/Turner
2020 = 21 pts per game (25th in league)
2021 = 20 pts per game (23rd in league)

2018 = 22 points a game given up (15th in league)
2019 = 27 points a game given up (27th in league)

JDR (23.5 points average per game given up in 2 years)

2020 = 21 points a game given up (4th in league)
2021 = 26 points a game given up (25th in league)

I think its laughable that you didn't mention the injures and covid inactives last year when making your comparisons. RR was a former COACH OF THE YEAR, so of course he is going to want his guys on the team. Evey coach does that. Scott Turner is a new o-coordinator i will give you that. We don't really know how he will play out. Comparing Maunsky to JDR to just crazy. Not even going to get into that.

Samuel was playing hurt everyone knows that. JD is the perfect change of pace back. He can play every down and is a threat for any defense. You can put Samuel in the slot and Brown/Sims on the outside with Terry. We are having losing seasons b/c we have no QB. The oline is the same as last year except we traded Scherrff for Norwell and W.Schitz for Flowers is a wash. As far as STARTERS are concerned, we are set except for MLB. It's not all doom and gloom.
