I might as well put this here ... dont know if it ended up getting posted ... sorry if it did ... i remember seeing a story showing all of Ehrhoffs points earned off second assists of Sedin goals

The Vancouver Canucks still enjoy the odd Christian Ehrhoff one-liner, so it hasn't got old quite yet.

"You take him off, and we brought in more [Aaron] Rome, but just not the same cap hit," Alex Burrows quipped.

They don't have the same salary either, separated by more than $9 million. They do, however, have the same number of goals. Three each. But Rome is out with a bro-ken thumb and the truth is, he was never the one who replaced Ehrhoff. That's been a collective effort. And an impressive one, too.

Through 36 games, Canucks blue-liners have produced 23 goals and 88 points. Last year, through the same, it was 18 goals and 75 points. Goal scoring is up and so is the power play. The Canucks defence may not be as deep as it was last year, but it's been more effective.

As a team, the Canucks started the season openly declaring Ehrhoff wouldn't be missed. Some of the players in more casual conversation suggested the entire line of "what will happen to the offence" questioning was over-the-top and misdirected. They had some good fun mocking Ehrhoff 's "50-point man" label.

Just consider what they're thinking now. The issue of defensive depth may yet haunt the Canucks, but so far they haven't missed anything. This, while Ehrhoff, the NHL's highest-paid defenceman, is playing like someone who will struggle to get 40 points, and is a minus-11 on a team in Buffalo which is currently outside of the playoff bubble.

"I always thought Ehrhoff was in a pretty good position last year," Kevin Bieksa said. "He played with some really good players. I'm not taking away anything from him, but then again, I am.

"We have some good forwards, they are going to make plays and he benefited from that."

Bieksa is one of the players who is benefiting now. But it hasn't been without some tinkering to his game. He started this year bent on being one of the players to pick up offensively. He had been able to put up 40 points in the past, but focused so much on trying to be a shutdown player last year, his offence was turned off like a tap. That tap proved difficult to reopen.

Bieksa started the season disastrously. In the first month, he was a minus-7. Five weeks in, he was a minus-9 in 16 games. Worse, the offence wasn't there either. Despite shooting more and pinching more, he had just three assists. He was on pace for a 15-point, minus-45 season.

"A lot of it was bad luck," Bieksa said. "I felt like I was playing well. I was doing everything right some games. I was just on the ice at the wrong time, and getting a minus.

"I started to doubt myself when I got down to minus-9. But I just kept telling myself if I keep playing the same way things would start to go the other way."

Things have turned around, and then some for Bieksa. In his past 15 games, he has 12 points and is a plus-12. With his 18 points total, he needs just four to top last year's production.

A key reason, is he is shooting again. With 82 shots already, he's 23 behind his output from last season.

But Bieksa mostly says he's just a guy in the right place with the right team.

"On this team, we are encouraged to make it a four-man rush," he said. "When we make the play up the wall or up the middle, the weak-side defenceman is supposed to be jumping.

"Some guys are looking to do it more than others, but if it's there, you go. There is no one on this team who is held back, that's for sure.

"We're all expected to play the same way. For example, you can call Big A [Andrew Alberts] a defensive defenceman, but he's encouraged to join the rush, if the play is there.

"That's why you see when a guy goes down, someone else comes in and you see a lot of the same results."

upper body....

It looks like head smacked the ice or shoulder injury....

It may have been worse if Brouwer got free. Why would he go at Brouwer who is a pretty bad man.

maybe a past playoff grudge from Hawks Nucks battles :noidea: ... still though youre right ... he would have done better if he hit Brouwer with his purse

Last night when posting the penalty on the TV screen, Comcast gave 5 minutes for fighting to an "Ehroff." At the time, I thought it was a mistake. But he erred, and now he's off, so maybe it was intentional. ;)

Not sure why he fought... maybe to get his team fired up? It was a clean hit prior.

Not sure how he was injured... the few punches he took were glancing and Brouwer's arm was at a weird angle, so they couldn't have much power. Gotta think it was something about the fall. to the ice with a guy on his back.

Here's the fight...
