That is the problem. Defenses start to stack the LOS. Even if he connects on check downs, the receiver is tackled almost immediately. Alex has to take some deeper shots for no other reason that to keep the defenses honest. In his physical condition on Sunday, he couldn't really do this.This is a very good point. Alex Smith does indeed seem to win a lot, and the best example of his value to a team might be his time with Washington.
He doesnt make many mistakes - although he does make some - and by throwing high percentage passes close to the LOS, he helps mitigate any ball insecurity.
The problem most recently though is that teams dont respect his deep ball, because he doesnt throw any, and thus he becomes a one dimensional check down artist extraordinaire. When ypu couple that with being unable to escape any pressure, its no wonder that the WFT could get nothing going in the second half against the Eagles.
At full strength, Smith could at least throw a pretty nice 15 yard slant pass to Terty Mac to keep defenses honest. Now? Ten yard hooks are about it.
