LeVar eh. Interesting. Though imo LaVar had all the attributes you'd want in a weakside backer. He certainly played outside of the scheme. Collins on the other-hand has no business in any type of man coverage 10+ yards beyond the LOS. He gets absolutely ate up in coverage. I don't know if he plays outside the scheme, he simply doesn't the attributes to play in a man cover scheme.

That Collins contract was ridiculous and once again put on display the ineptitude of Bruce Allen. Though I can't say I really understand Collins hesitancy at playing more LB than safety. It'll certainly be to his advantage come contract time and it plays nicely th the attributes that he does have.
I am a long time Penn State fan. Lavar was such a great athlete. He freelanced in Joe's defense. He freelanced here too. His knee and Greg Williams not liking him got him out of here. Even though he free lanced he could still make some plays. Imagine ... they thought Archuleta could play. :L

Collins as you said can play near the LOS but he can't cover himself. It was a terrible signing and typical BA.

I haven't been able to find it since, but I won't forget a claim made by Marvin Lewis after his 1 n done stint as Def Co for the Skins. He said n this is pretty much a quote. Had Lavar simply done what he was supposed to do instead of what he wanted to do. He would've ended up with 27 sacks in 2002. I still don't know who wanted AA, but that in some ways was the most idiotic signing in the last 20 years. That move along with a few others is why Sean Taylor would have left the Skins first chance he got.
