Perhaps after 2011?

Well, I know a new CBA is coming up, but teams likely still won't be able to trade draft picks. The draft set-up doesn't really allow for it.

I know the M's would get a sandwich compensatory pick if they let Lee go as a free agent, somewhere between the first and second rounds.

The draft isn’t perfect and Weiner, who maintains regular contact with players through e-mail, text messaging and face-to-face contact, notes that the MLBPA was in favor of trading draft picks in 2002 and again in 2006. Weiner says the MLBPA would consider trading picks to further competitive balance when the current collective bargaining agreement between players and owners expires after 2011.

Others, including Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated, have suggested that trading picks would allow players to refuse to sign unless the team that drafted them dealt them to specific clubs. That could give players more say in their future, though not necessarily more money.

Now, teams can’t trade draft picks and can’t trade the players they sign for a year after their first pro contracts. Weiner points out that clubs would have more options if they could trade draft picks like NBA, NFL and NHL teams.

See, in my opinion, that would be a terrible idea. It would give more power to the rich teams and take away the one way small market teams can build. The only change I foresee in the draft is that draftees will receive slotted or capped bonuses to enhance competitiveness.

Yeah, that worked out well for the Blackhawks this past year. However, they are facing 4.5 approximate million in cap cusion to absorb this year...
bonuses can and do backfire.

That would be a good deal for both sides. Aaron Hicks is the real deal, I think, and the Twins draft well, so any first round pick of theirs is likely worth having. They have an outstanding track record (see Mauer, Morneau, Santana, Hunter, and Liriano as examples). And the M's aren't ready to compete right now, so having a guy like Lee isn't particularly worth it right now.

i think football is slow. 10 second play followed by standing there for 25 seconds. and the clock runs while they stand there. i bet there is less than 30 minutes of actual play in a football game.
