Clancy needs to realize he's not coaching an NFL defense. These kids will get tired and nicked up more than a professional and not giving the backup meaningful snaps makes him ill prepared when he is forced to come in. Yes he's got 4 and 5 star guys in many positions but playing them every snap makes them less effective at the end of games where it's really hot or you're playing a physical team. I'd rather have a fresh 3* kid in there learning and spelling the starter once in a while and if an injury happens that backup is ready.
One thing I havent seen much this season that would have helped Darnold is the check down to the back when he's gone through his first two progressions and they aren't open. The last two games I attended I took a friend of mine who was a HS QB at the time Todd Marinovich and Rob Johnson were seniors. My friend won ALL city honors over them . Too bad he's only 5'10. lol. But he mentioned that Darnold rarely dumps it to the back when every ones covered. He either tries a tough throw or he runs. He said you might only get three yards but it makes the third down more manageable and could have extended drives.
Darnold also isn't a puss. I'd take the guy who still needs work over the guy who's out every other week with a broken eyelash any day.Agree 100%. I'd add that sometimes, that backup is a 4 or 5 star guy as well. But he's not going to perform like one if he's given no reps and then suddenly thrown into the deep end of the pool because the guy ahead of him got hurt.
This is why I think Darnold would be best served to come back for 1 more year. Staying in the pocket and working through his progressions is usually the last thing a young qb masters and that looks to be the same with Darnold.
That, imo, was the glaring difference between him and Rosen in this years game. Rosen is polished and patient enough to work through his progressions, Darnold is not.

I think AG slipped him some cash and a few mail order brides to go away so Smith would take the job.Wait... what happened to Baldwin?
Falk wasn't your problem. Not at all. We watched entirely different games if you think a change at QB alone makes ANY difference at all in the outcome of that game.
It's not hard champ. When you rush 3 and STILL get sacks/hurries/knockdowns you win. UW had 8 in coverage against 5 receivers/backs/TE's. THAT'S why you couldn't move the ball.
Vita Vea was your problem. He broke double and triple blocks and still got to Falk. No QB can beat that.

Wazzy is obsessed with blaming Falk. You drop back 8 to cover 5 and still reach the QB you've got a lot of blame to spread around. You left out how he was shoving the center straight back into Falk's lap!

They're reported to be long time friends so I think baring some dream candidate agreeing to this behind the scenes the past couple weeks, Herm was going to get this job no matter what. Sumlin was probably a better overall choice, but I think he wasn't all that interested in the job. The speed in which he puts a staff together will say alot. He probably already had his ducks in the row with certain positions ready to go. He will need some recruiting studs.
For ASU to really succeed, you got to recruit:
Keep the best talent from instate. Put the wall up.
Hit California hard.
Augment the classes with talent from states like Texas, Hawaii, and find some hidden gems in tSEC country.
From what I've read, Graham had a bad rep with many local Arizona H.S. coaches. Flat out ignored certain good programs as well like Saguaro H.S. who produced Trent Murphy and many believed it would of been ASU to beat for his commit. They're one of the top talent pools in the state, but Graham completely ignores the coach and the program, and so there you go, he commits to Washington. As an AD, you've got to feel those kind of massive wiffs at the real difference makers that could end up on your program.
That and besides some early success, the program has been mediocre under him the past couple years. Absolutely mediocre. I don't blame the AD. ASU should aim higher than 7-5 records with a well established coach.
Will Herm do a better job? Time will tell. But I think it was time to mix things up a bit and make some bold moves to improve recruiting and the product. Graham had worn out his welcome.
This is a good thing for USC though... I would love to see Rosen under Kelly, he would still be a pocket passer and not contribute much more to the running game, but Kelly's system will surely provide a better running game than Mora I would expect.lol
Me too. But purely from an "NFL ready" perspective, Rosen is there, Darnold isn't. I hate to admit that any Bruin is better than any Trojan, but I can't deny what I saw.
I will say that when all is said and done, if Darnold masters going through his progressions in the pocket, he will ultimately be the better player in the NFL because of his athleticism and intangibles. But right now, Rosen is better.

I wonder just how much this comes into play in Rosen's mind in staying or not? Either way, it likely wont come into play and Rosen declares for the Draft, but them passing numbers could be video game like!
Modster will do well under Chip, but he still isn't the type of QB we will likely see compared to the Kelly QB recruits ultimately to follow, but I do think that Modster is closer to Chips type of QB and we will see him contribute to the run more than Rosen would have.
The only question I have regarding Modster, will Chip bring in a System QB before Modster is done at UCLA or will we see Modster running the show in Westwood for the next two, or three seasons?
