With Lester dominating the FA news, it is apparent Max Scherzer (and Boras) will wait it out...

If Lester gets near $150m, what can Scherzer expect? (he turned down $144m last winter)

Will the losers of Lester dig deeper and go after Scherzer? Will they settle for Shields?

Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports that free agent left-hander Jon Lester will "likely" decide on a team by the end of the week.
Several days ago, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported that Lester had been offered a six-year, $138 million deal by the Cubs and that the Red Sox might be willing to bump their own offer to $130 million.

Can Max get more?:suds:

I know Lester doesn't cost a pick. And I also am not looking forward to Scherzer resigning for huge money in Detroit. But Id be surprised to see him get less years or money than Lester.

What is the $$ valuation of a pick? Obviously it would depend on where the pick is (the #12 pick is worth more than the # 26 pick) and each team probably values picks differently due to how seriously they take drafting.

But in general, would a pick equate to docking 10M from the total value of the contract? I am not sure how to monetize this aspect of the calculus.

Im just thinking of overall value.

If Im going to overspend, Id do it on the lefty that doesn't cost me a pick. But, Id think Scherzer's market value is high enough to over compensate for that. I don't even know if the same teams are interested in both.

I know Id rather see Lester signed in Detroit, for less than MS turned down, and Scherzer walk. Get a lefty and a pick. Not gonna happen, but ya know, a guy can dream.
