Over the last two days, I've read a pair of articles focusing on umpires on ESPN.com/fivethirtyeight.com. The first was an entry in Jayson Stark's blog focusing on what he called "umpire stats". The other was an article by Etan Green that focused on umpire bias, and I'm not talking about the suspected bias against certain managers. Both are pretty interesting reads. You'll get to see definitively which umpires tend to have larger strike zones and which umps tend to have smaller ones and what all that means in one article and you'll find out why some borderline pitches get called what they get called. It's probably not going to make you like umpires any more than you do now, especially certain umpires.
