"Green Bay — General manager John Schneider, who helped sign cornerback Tramon Williams to the Green Bay Packers' practice squad in 2006, now wants him starting for the Seattle Seahawks next season.

If the Packers don't re-sign Williams by the start of unrestricted free agency Tuesday, look for the Seahawks to make every attempt to secure him as Byron Maxwell's replacement opposite Richard Sherman.

A source close to Williams and his agent, Rodney Williams of Katy, Texas, told the Journal Sentinel that the Seahawks have made it clear they're going after the 31-year-old cornerback because they have little or no chance to re-sign Maxwell, an unrestricted free agent.

The Seahawks prefer Williams to other veteran cornerbacks because Schneider knows him from four seasons in Green Bay and views him as an ideal fit for coach Pete Carroll's aggressive Cover 3 coverage scheme.

Meanwhile, the Packers have told Williams they'll take him back on a two-year contract worth $8 million, according to a source. The team's proposal was rejected.

Williams would prefer returning to Green Bay but is seeking a three- or even four-year contract averaging at least $5 million. The source said Williams wanted significant guaranteed money as protection against being released.

Last week, a personnel director for an NFC team estimated Williams' value on the free-agent market at about $5 million per year. An executive in personnel for another NFC team said Williams should command an average of between $4 and $6 million.

"He just probably won't get as many years as he wants," the second NFC executive said. "He went from being really fast to fast. He could still do it. It's just how long can he still do it?"

In October, Williams expressed confidence that he could play four more seasons at a high level.

It was with fond memories in February that Williams remembered Schneider telling him early in his Packers' career that he wouldn't be dispatched to NFL Europe because Green Bay wanted its coaches to develop him.

The Seahawks would dearly love to retain Maxwell, and they're $24.3 million beneath the salary cap.

Maxwell, however, might be the hottest cornerback headed for free agency, and Seattle appears resigned to losing him.

Either nickel back Jeremy Lane or No. 4 cornerback Tharold Simon, with further development, might be suitable as Maxwell’s successor at right cornerback. Simon played poorly in the Super Bowl but had been much more effective earlier.

Lane probably won’t even play in 2015 after suffering a blown knee and broken arm in the Super Bowl. Simon is questionable after undergoing surgery last month for the dislocated shoulder that he suffered Dec. 21.

With $25.25 million in cap space next season committed to safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor and Sherman, the Seahawks see Williams as a reliable, durable veteran capable of playing every down outside or inside until help arrives.

Williams allowed the 35-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Kearse in overtime that enabled Seattle to beat Green Bay, 28-22, in the NFC Championship Game. There was no safety help on the play.

In that game, Williams set up Ha Ha Clinton-Dix's two interceptions and covered well. In the opener, also won by the Seahawks in Seattle, he broke up two passes and didn't allow a completion for 20 yards or more.

Williams' proven ability to play both bump-and-run and off-coverage fits Carroll's scheme.

The Packers must make a decision not only on Williams but also cornerback Davon House, 25, who is bound for unrestricted free agency as well.

If Williams and House both depart, their cornerback depth chart would include Sam Shields, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde, Demetri Goodson and Tay Glover-Wright.

Jarrett Bush appears headed for the unrestricted market as well.

Last season, Williams ranked sixth on the team in average salary per year at $8.25 million.

The Packers and Seahawks will meet at Lambeau Field this season.

Not sure if the Seahawks would want to pay that kind of money for a 33 year old back up but anything is possible I guess.

If he goes, he goes. I've always liked him. Street free agent to start his career - gotta love those guys. Ted has proved time and again he knows what he's doing. Take care of your cap and you take care of your future.

We offered him a deal. If he can get more on the market more power to him. I hold no grudges...with him anyway.
