Dewey had 11 seasons at 120+ OPS+ (with a career OPS+ over 120) vs Ichiro's 4 seasons.

Both finished top 10 in MVP voting 4 times, with Ichiro's taking it once. Ichiro's received votes 9 times vs Deweys 5 times.

If we are looking at ONLY MLB time, I think Dewey takes it by a nose. But if we want to look at Ichiro's JPPL years, than I think Ichiro moves ahead. The fact that MLB numbers were used to determine seeding and Sadaharu Oh was not included, I will assume we are looking at MLB only.

I don't like not voting for Ichiro. I think he is a HOFer and I have no prob with Evans having to buy a ticket, but the HOF takes other variables into account.

I actually think ichiro is one of the most over-rated players of all time... Yes, he is a future HOF, but it is ONLY because he reached the milestone of 3000 hits...
A speedster with a career OBP of .358, is just not that good... So despite the fact that One player will be a HOFer and the other never will... I would take the Non HOFer as the better player...

I'm Red Sox fan and old enough to have seen Dwight play his entire career, a huge fan. But I voted for Ichiro before even bothering with the career stats because I thought it was an easy call. Obviously Evans will have a higher OPS but Ichiro was one of the best contact hitters I've ever seen.

But after looking over the stats harder if I had a chance to vote again I'd change it to Evans. But it's damned close. I agree if the Japanese League was included it would go to Ichiro.

Nah, the little guy may get shut out and I'd hate to hurt his feelings. Once I saw him hit a pitch that hit the ground a foot in front of the home plate I really liked Ichiro.

despite the 13-20 here, I am shocked that Ichiro is not winning... I thought that people really over-rated him... I guess I am wrong with that...

If JPPL numbers were included (I know oxy never said either way, but I am not including them) I would have gone with Ichiro.

I disagree. The jppl had a much smaller talent pool, and other things to skew a players numbers. So I don't care what his numbers looked like there.

Don't get me wrong, he deserves to make it to the HOF and he deserves to make the JPPL HOF But when comparing him to the best players he is very weak. He gets over-rated IMO because he was likable, flashy, and Japanese. But if you look at his numbers he really was not a great lead off man compared to the greats. He only had 2 seasons of walking over 50 times and only had an OBP over .370 5 times. Not really great numbers.

I used MLB WAR only, but like everything else in these it is each person's preference who was better.

if he would have played 5 or 6 seasons earlier in the majors, he gets 4000 hits and maybe 800 sbs...still 3000 hits and 500 sbs...not sure how many hits it takes to overrated but he is way better than Tim Raines.

Dewey got fucked over in 1981 by the strike (he was having his best season up until the season ended) and the MVP voting. A relief pitcher with 78 innings should never win MVP, and even the CYA is a stretch. It should have gone to Dewey or Rickey. Maybe even Grich.

I know a lot of people do, but I could care less about awards when comparing players like this. Too many times the writers have had ulterior motives when voting to be trustworthy.

My vote is still for Grich in 81.

In all fairness to Ichiro, he started in the majors at age 27 when he was probably in the middle of his 'prime,' so those career rate stats he had could've been higher had he come to the majors at an earlier age. And on the contrary, it can be argued that he held on too long to overcompensate for that...up to 2010 (age 37), he had .376 OBP which has declined in recent years.

Granted it's his stats in Japan, but Ichiro at age 20 was hitting .385. So if he started in the majors earlier and didn't hang on too late to compensate for that, I'd bet on him having a higher OBP than the .358 he has right now.
