Very similar to the Doerr/Randolph matchup.

Hack was the better hitter (7 120 OPS+ seasons vs 4 for Nettles) but he had 1700 fewer career PAs. Nettles had 4 full seasons with an OPS+ under 100 vs only 1 (maybe 2 - his last season he 283 PAs) for Hack.

Basically, Hack retired when he started to suck while Nettles continues to play. I can't put that as a + in Nettles column.

Slight edge to Hack offensively, but Nettles' defense was very highly rated (+140 career FRAA), which is a large reason why Nettles has a better career WAR by a decent amount.

Unfortunately, as I have mentioned elsewhere, I just don't trust defensive stats yet. Due to this, I am limited to personal eye-ball experience, with looking at (BLECH) Gold Glove wins.

Basically, I am discounting defense. This is a MAJOR hole in my comparisons, but it is what it is.

I would MUCH rather have hack in my lineup than nettles. Defense is important but it is not even close offensively!!!
