Pedroia's been a great 2B, but Morgan had more WAR from 72-76 (47.7 in 3257 PA) than Pedroia has in his career (44.6 in 5490 PA). That 5-year stretch is arguably the greatest ever by a 2nd baseman. Morgan batted .303/.431/.499 (163 OPS+) with 310 stolen bases (caught only 63 times).

Joe Morgan is a top 5 lead off man of all time... Pedroia, has had a great career, but he is not legendary in any way...

Morgan could very well win this whole thing.

What is the argument for Pedroia over Morgan here? I understand homerism, and I am OK with that (seriously). But is there any other argument?

I am confused on why he is 4th and not 3rd(WAR lies). But to me it is between him and Collins to be the best ever. I would take both over Hornsby

Nap LaJoie has a higher war, and to me WAR is a good place to start but not a good place to end.

I know he has a higher WAR. but the problem with him is that he is a speed guy who played around the same time as Eddie Collins. Collins was superior. So he is not really in question for the best.

I was tempted to vote for Pedroia because of my hatred of Morgan the announcer. The Giants announcer who use to do the Sunday games with Morgan was IMO brought down so much by having to sit with him and Theismann.

But in the end this is about them as players and Morgan was just to good to let the reverse homers get involved.

A number of these guys are not really in contention to be named best ever. I started it to get discussions so everyone gets included.

I know what you are doing. Your just starting the talks and bringing in the fun. My point wasn't about this exercise. It was just saying how the 4th 2B has a much higher probability of winning the 2b position than the 3rd IMO.

In most positions it really is either a 2 man race or one player is the clear winner.

I think this is a fun exorcize, and I think most others do as well. When someone says some like "Smith is clearly better than Jones and Jones has no chance of winning", they aren't saying you were a moron for seeding Jones higher. I think this is just the discussion that this exorcize was designed to create :)

Being called a moron is part of life.

I am trying to figure out ways to keep this going once it ends. Maybe do Best of Decade with DH as a list starting in the 70s. O f course that would have to be only eight spots instead of 32.

You could do best player of each decade. Top 32 in WAR for each decade.
