Here something I discovered about the SEC and it's non stellar defenses defenses this year.

#1 Alabama - has held their opponents to 18.47 points fewer than their average

#9 Missouri - has held their opponents to 7.6 points fewer than their average

#11 the barn - has held their opponents to 9.9 points fewer than their average

#12 aTm - has given up an average 4.2 points more than their average

#13 LSU - has held their opponents to 4 points fewer than their average

#14 USC - has held their opponents to 8 points fewer than their average

Except for aTm those really aren't bad numbers.

what do you mean "than their average"

i'm pretty sure alabama's average margin of victory is a lot more than 18 points. and for that matter, all of those teams should be giving up "fewer points than their average"

Opponents of said SEC teams are scoring that much less than their season average is against all other opponents.

I would never include A&M and defense in the same thread.

Great joke though.

well, given that most of the nonconference opponents are considerably weaker, that makes sense. i wouldn't really expect the average team on florida's atlantic schedule to hold them to as few points as auburn. i wouldn't say that makes out defense particularly good. i agree the sec probably still has the best defenses in the country this season though.

And that reverts back to, LOL @ aTm!

The concept is likely useless.
It adds in the non-conference schedule and FCS cupcakes.

For example Auburn (random example) plays Western Carolina and holds the to 3 points.
But that clearly overmatched FCS team goes out and averages 24 in its tiny FCS league.

So, Auburn can claim it hold WCU to 21 points below their average???

It is about the EYEBALL TEST.
Even the most diehard SEC fanboy can see the radically improved SEC offenses.

aTm and Missouri brought with them the offensive philosophy that is tricking down everywhere.
Combine that with good quarterback play, and the SEC defenses are suffering.

This is about the eyeball test. SEC defenses don't pass it.
And that is the same as everyone else as well.

The days of nonstop 12-7 games seem like a slowly fading relic of the past even in the SEC.
Even the most diehard SEC fanboy can see the impact of good quarterback play.

The SEC has high quality offenses now even at places like LSU where it was a rarity in the SEC BCS era.

Alabama, aTm, Missouri, Georgia, Ole Miss

Is there a corresponding stat that shows numbers of defensive series per game, or perhaps opposing time of possession? A&M hasn't ever run an uptempo offense like we have these last two years, when our defense has been atrocious. Averaging points allowed by a defense of a running/ball control team as opposed to a run-and-gun uptempo team will skew the numbers.

I call BS on this..
Bama is giving up 66% of an offense average output (#3)
Florida 71% (#4)
LSU 96% (34th)
Mizzu 98% (39th)
Vandy 103% (57th)
Georgia 104% (58th)
MSU 106% (62nd)
Ole Miss 110% (71st)
Auburn 113% (82nd)
Ark: 118% (94th)
Tenn 126% (106th)
A&M 137% (118th)

so in this printed study only 3 SEC teams hold their opponents below their average total yards. That seems to verify our eyes.

Pts per Possession: A&M is 93rd at 2.58 pts and 105th in yards per possession at 38.64.

Maybe you should take one too. Even though there are only 6 data points it gives 5 df to make a means analysis. Whether or not the corresponding t-test is significant at the 95% (or 99% if you want to be a bitch) level is the only determination that needs to be made.

I usually worry more about points than yards. I don't care if a team gets 1000 yds. :-)lie:) as long as they're kept out of the endzone.

Pts can be skewed for a various amount of reasons. I actually prefer per play and per drive stats. Regardless, any stat that has Auburn as the #11 and A&M as the #12 defense in the country needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

yawn. aced more than a couple of stats classes in my day. but that's neither here nor there. just don't ignore data because it doesn't fit your hypothesis. poor execution of the scientific method.

I believe that's their overall BCS ranking.

i'm pretty sure those were merely their rankings in the BCS.
