Interesting article in Hawkcentral about the top 10 Hawk football players of all-time under Fry:

Harty: The top 10 Hawkeyes to play under Fry | Hawk Central

I think, for the most part, the list is pretty spot-on. I would probably bump up Larry Station, Andre Tippett and Sedrick Shaw (my all-time fav Hawk) above Reggie Roby just because of the difficulty of their positions.

Any disagreements with their list?

Pretty accurate list. You could argue who's top 10 versus top 25ish. I think TE Jonathon Hayes should be at least honorable mention and maybe RBs Owen Gill or Eddie Phillips. I remember sneaking into Sloan Wallace Stadium in W'loo and watching Reggie Roby kick-off and punt balls OUT of the stadium for East High.

I still will never understand how Shaw never amounted to much in the NFL. Man, that guy was an absolute beast with the ball. I know he didn't have 4.4 40 speed, but I certainly thought he would become a starter with an NFL team.

Maybe the real first instance of AIRBHG?

Holy shit. I didn't know AIRBHG went so far back. I also didn't know we passed on Gale Sayers. I suppose we could also add Harmon's 4 Rose bowl fumbles....

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH never ever say that name! Those fumbles weren't fumbles, they were the result of the mob payoff, that is not AIRBHG, I don't believe in that non entity myself. The running back that shall not be named got in too deep, just go read the stories, fumbles my ass.

I'm with Hawk...they were paid fumbles...cost Iowa a Rose Bowl...should be never allowed in Kinnick again. He started AIRBHG...

The list is pretty accurate except for #2...move him down to bottom of the rest...

I also think Dwight deserves to be higher. The kid begged Fry to get on the field and never let him down when he did.

You can't overlook Harmon's 4 fumble game when talking about him, Hell.....it basically defines the guy. But if you'll remember, he was the one of the top..........if not THEEEE top......RB in the country that year. He could really do it all, ran the ball with speed and elusiveness and was probably Iowa's best receiver for 2 or 3 years. We may never see another Ronnie Harmon again in an Iowa uni.

Don't forget that Harmon also dropped a gimme pass for the Chargers in the playoffs. If he wasn't under the mob's thumb, he could surely be labeled as a big-game choker.

I am boycotting this thread due to the overuse of that bunghole's name, mob bought and paid from Jersey...typical stereotype I know but it came out to be the truth...in court even

Cost Iowa a national title maybe. Iowa was #4 in the AP and #3 in the Coaches poll going into that game and number 1 and 2 both lost. An Iowa win and they may have at least split the title with Oklahoma who beat #1 PSU.

Speaking of Hawkeye trivia and missed Natl Championships, how many points were we up on UNLV at halftime of that Elite Eight game under Dr. Tom???

I think it was actually 21 or 22pts. Probably our last legitimate shot at a basketball national title in our lifetimes.

Actually I believe it was only 16. Iowas biggest lead in the game ( I think) was only 19 but it seemed like more because of how well Iowa played in the first half something like 58 points. They then couldnt make a damn shot in the second half and only scored 23(?) in that half. UNLV scored 42 in both halves.

Yep, you are correct. 58 freaking points in the first half alone, just a perfect half of offensive basketball by Iowa. 58-42 at the half (had to look it up).

Look at Iowa's lineup from that boxscore:

Armstrong
Reaves
Wright
Moe
Lohaus
Marble
Horton
B. Jones
Gamble
Lorenzen

Short of some huge recruiting scandal, Iowa will never, EVER put a lineup like that on the floor ever again. If you could magically take that lineup and move it to 2013, I'm guessing at least 2 of those kids turn pro after that season (likely Marble/Horton).

If I remember correctly, we still had a chance to win or tie the game with under 10 seconds remaining but a lob pass either to or from Lohaus/Gamble was high (screen had worked perfectly and the target was wide open).

Much like the Ronnie Harmon game, this one still pisses me off, 26 years later.
