Interesting. Short of big injury, I feel like he probably plays it out anyway...poorly, but he'll play it out. What if MTL buys him out down the line?
Seems like a chance for some big time shenanigans in the future. Weber thinks about retiring, MTL agrees to LTIR him only if Nash offers them something in return...

I get that you were just using example numbers, but if I'm understanding it right, the actual numbers would be $56M in actual salary vs. only (haha, only) about $31.4M in cap hit, so almost $25M in savings. The recapture penalty is based on how long is still left on the contract, but if he retired with say two years left, I think Nash would face $25M in cap penalties over just 4 years!
I think even I had it wrong. Apparently it's not double the remaining term like a buyout. So if he was angry, Weber could retire with one year left and subject Nash to a single year penalty of almost $25M!

This may be the best explanation I've found:
Luongo Rule: How new NHL CBA will punish cap circumventing contracts

To wit: let’s say the Canucks trade Luongo soon. Luongo has played two years of his 12-year contract, the Canucks paying him $16.716 million in salary but only absorbing a $5.33 million cap hit each year. That’s a cap savings of $6.056 million over two years so far for Vancouver. Under this new rule, should the Canucks trade him now and he retires with three years left on his contract, Vancouver would be charged that $6.056 million in cap savings over the final three years left on his deal from 2019 to 2022. However, let’s say for argument’s sake Luongo gets traded to Toronto, the Maple Leafs also would be subject to cap penalties if Luongo retires before the end of his deal.

To wit, part 2: If Luongo were to play the next seven years of his deal in Toronto before retiring, the Leafs would be paying him $43.666 million in salary but only counting $37.31 million against the cap over those seven years, a cap savings of $6.356 million. So if Luongo retires with three years left on his deal (because his salary falls to $1.618 million in the 10th year and then $1 million in the last two years of the deal), the Leafs would get charged that $6.356 million on their cap spread evenly over the remaining three years of his deal.

Shea is not going to like those province of Quebec taxes, although if the Canadian dollar stays low, he'll get a good exchange rate.

If anybody is still wondering why all seven Canadian based teams missed the playoffs last season, take a look at what some of their respective GM's did today?

Wait, I didn't realize this trade happened two days before PK's NMC kicked in. Talk about a kick in the nuts. He's a solid guy, so I'm sure he'll adjust, but anger is certainly justified.

Best odds to make the playoffs from Canada? I guess Flames or Leafs?

Now that Stamkos is off the market, do Toronto fans start saying there weren't interested in the first place and are really looking forward to next summer when Tavares takes a hometown discount to play in Toronto?

I'd rank the teams' (in tiers) chances as:

WPG
CGY

OTT
EDM

VAN
MTL

TOR

The rebuild is far from finished in TO.

Actually, forgot about the Jets. I'd put them in first too. Leafs have a shot in that their division is Tampa Bay and the misfits. There's FLA too, but they've been making some interesting moves too, so we'll see. It'd also take the young guys lighting the world on fire.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I think the Leafs finish last in the division. If you like young teams in that division take the Sabres.
