I took a look at all potential bubble type teams to get an idea of their overall rankings based on the 4 primary metric sytems being used right now ( RPI, Pomeroy, Sagarin and BPI) and found some really alarming truths about the system that is used in the majority of the cases ( RPI) Here goes. The following is the ranking averages of primary bubble teams using ALL 4 metric systems and their current rankings in each
1. Virginia- RPI 62, Sagarin 27, Pomeroy 18, BPI 40 ( average ranking of 37)
2. Kentucky- RPI 51, Sagarin 29, Pomeroy 33, BPI 43 ( average ranking of 39)
3. Lasalle- RPI 36, Sagarin 50, Pomeroy 47, BPI 47 ( average ranking of 45)
4. Iowa State- RPI 53, Sagarin 41, Pomeroy 45, BPI 42 ( average ranking of 45)
5. Iowa- RPI 76, Sagarin 35, Pomeroy 31, BPI 52 ( average ranking of 48)
6. Ole Miss- RPI 57, Sagarin 46, Pomeroy 51, BPI 45 ( average ranking of 49)
7. Boise State- RPI 44, Sagarin 57, Pomeroy 50, BPI 48 ( average ranking of 50)
8. Baylor- RPI 67, Sagarin 40, Pomeroy 54, BPI 50 ( average ranking of 53)
9. Villanova- RPI 55, Sagarin 45, Pomeroy 53, BPI 61 ( average ranking of 54)
10. Temple- RPI 41, Sagarin 56, Pomeroy 75, BPI 56 ( average ranking of 57)
11. Tennessee- RPI 56, Sagarin 48, Pomeroy 66, BPI 65 ( average ranking of 58)
12. Southern Miss- RPI 46, Sagarin 65, Pomeroy 59, BPI 64 ( average ranking of 59)
13. Maryland- RPI 68, Sagarin 55, Pomeroy 62, BPI 53 ( average ranking of 60)
14. Providence- RPI 76, Sagarin 60, Pomeroy 58, BPI 59 ( average ranking of 64)
15. Alabama- RPI 59, Sagarin 59, Pomeroy 68, BPI 68 ( average ranking of 65)
16. Arizona State- RPI 93, Sagarin 81, Pomeroy 78, BPI 66 ( average ranking of 80)
- Holy shit this was a lot of work but it is SOOOO telling. The RPI uses the LEAST amount of variables, has the largest deviation from average ( BY FAR) and has 4 teams that have an RPI of 20+ spots higher than there average metric total ( UVA, Iowa, Kentucky and Baylor). NO OTHER METRIC has more than an 18 spot difference for any ONE team. LOL. That is crazy. Also it is abundantly clear that RPI favors mid majors ( probably due to the RPIs insane valuation of road wins which mid majors are ALWAYS going to have more of because they play more road games). Every single mid major has an RPI ranking of AT LEAST 9 spots higher than their average overall ranking. Only 2 major conference teams can say the same ( Tennessee and Bama). Why are we using the WORST possible system to select the at larges??? Crazy.
